Title: Pls Recommend Enhanced CD "Multimedia portion Info"
Post by: Kingfish on December 27, 2010, 09:59:42 PM
I'm working with a band, mastering their CD, and (Through some help on this forum) am Able to successfully Author a Multi-Session Blue Book CD, that I've tested in several CD players old and new, that read as a 14 Track Audio CD - As well, when placed in a computer, the 2nd session, shows up as a separate Data CD with the Video Files they wish to include.

This is really about as far as I want to take making the PreMaster however I am curious (Perhaps even some recommendations of companies or individuals), about the design and possibilities of the "Data Portion" of the Enhanced CD.

Ideally, the band would like some kind of "Auto Run Splash Screen" Like a DVD menu, Nice Picture Backdrop of the band, with a few options "Watch Bonus Video" - :listen to the CD - Visit our website - join our Fan Club etc.....

Obviously something that ran on Mac and PC, it'd be great to hook up with a company or individual that does "This side" of Enhanced CD's and could even send me the "Data Session" as an Image -

Be nice, in the future to "Have a guy", by default to send this kind of work to, as most Labels have thus stuff "In House", when these Indie acts want this stuff done... I'd like to know how to get it done for them, as it's becoming more and more common,

-------Attn Moderator: Re: Updated Mastering Demystified Policies NAME POLICY -----

I'm not Hiding my identity, I've been posting on Audio forums (new to here) for over a decade as KingFish - and my PERSONAL website is posted in my Profile, in fact, take out the www. and the .com and That, IS my Last name - I hope that is enough to appease the policy, I made the mistake early on the internet, of using my 1st and last name in Profile "Name fields" and in signatures of posts... and every conversation I had (And I have a lot) was being indexed (And still there after 10 years) by most search engines. Now, after a careful 10 years of not using my name in these places, but still letting people "Know who I am", Search engines also pull up Discographies, Photos, Videos, Websites related to me... not 20,000 conversations about Gear, as I talk a lot Smile

Again, I'm not "Challenging" the policy... just hopefully providing enough of a "Workaround" to prove that I'm not a "Troll, Hiding my identity"

If you click on my Website, you'll see exactly who I am, and if you search the DUC for "Kingfish" you'll see a couple of thousand posts, all constructive contributions.

Dr. Toby Mountain knows a lot about Enhanced CD, and menu creation.  Naturally he is a gentleman.

Hi David, welcome to Mastering Demystified.

Authoring the data portion of the disc isn't the big deal for most mastering engineers, but creating the data is. Most likely a good web guy will know how to do this.

On a PC, autorun is fairly simple (creating an autorun.ini file). On a Mac, I *think* it's impossible...

OS9 did in fact have some provisions for Autorun - but this was completely abandoned for OSX - so at this point Autorun on Macs is a no-go.

The autorun.inf file in Windows allows for the launching of exe files only - so if you want to launch something like an HTML table of contents instead (which is what I usually do for the Enhanced CD's I author) you need to use an intermediate exe file that can launch other file types.  I use the freeware Autorunpro.exe - http://www.ezau.com/latest/articles/autorun.shtml

Best regards,

Yes, this is what i'm looking for, really, a web / Graphics / Flash / (Maybe even App builder??) guy or Company, that specializes in this kind of Data Creation for Enhanced Music CD.

Thanks Dana, I'll save the bookmark, and if these guys get serious about wanting to do a "Proper Design" of their Enhanced CD, rather then Just have me Dump some Videos on a Multi Session PreMaster.... I'll give them a call, see what they'd charge to design the GUI / Data portion of the CD.

Ya, I think it's probably best to keep it simple... no "AutoRun" or Exe's that will trigger some AntiVirus software, or work on some systems, and not others, as per their personal settings / Options / preferences.

Probably just a well designed Graphic folder or Icon, rather then a 2nd "Generic CD Icon", Titled "Bonus Features" that the user could elect to run the GUI, be it HTML, Flash, or what ever the "Design" of the Data portion is.

Macromedia Director is the tool that'll do all this.

And I believe is what was generally used in the 90's to create the content for Blue Book.

Basically the same as Shockwave (since superseded by flash). But was able to be self contained. It can export a executable file, (yup export not compile) and with the correct plug-ins can also run native on OSX. Haven't tried it since V.8, but it used to be able to do both. (their up to V11 now I think).

The scripting is written in 'lingo' and plug-ins are called 'extras'.

 Here's a primer:

For basic stuff like DVD style menus, that should be plenty. You can get more complex, and build entire video games and interactive elements if you feel like you have time/inclination/desire.

I made a test with one that wrapped in a QEMU engine, and 4 different variety of linux OS's. Put in the disc, it would autorun, pop open the splash screen, and give a bunch of click able pictures. Click on one, and the QEMU emulator would run itself, and within a minuet you'd have a full LInux OS running inside your windows environment. All driven through the Director instance. Rather useless, but pretty fun none-the-less.
