Yowza. Who needs Starbucks?

I hear the Helmet reference. It's actually very blatant and reminiscent of early stuff.

Very cool. So, what did you use on the guitars?  Laughing

i played a 72 fender thinline (actually a japanese lawsuit copy) that i've put rio grande P-90's in, graphite saddles, graphite nut and locking tuners.  through an Acoustic GT-60 tube amp, into my Park 4x12 with Full-Tone speakers loaded.

August plays an SG loaded with a humbucker and a P-90, through is 50 watt JCM-800.  he used my 4x12 for tracking.

we cut this entire record in our bass player's basement to a Pro Tools M-Powered system.  that one with an 8 channel interface like the 002 console thing......

every single track was cut through that rig, and mixed here at Theta Rhythm.

AND......Grant engineered all the guitars and vocals.  chris and i  (bass player) cut the drums and bass.

drums were cut with a mackie Onyx 800R going light pipe to the Mpowered rig.

bass was the same pre's

guitars were cut with the stock 002 pres

vocals went to a bellari tube pre over driven a touch, to an RNC, to the 002 line input.

aren't i supposed to be pissed to front a hard rock band?

Yeah for sure, that's what I mean!

But you never sound like that on the phone...

If I could stomach it, there'd be smiley faces in this post and my last.

Actually, I've found AE's do get angrier with age, so no surprise there really.

This reminds me of an old adage that I think makes a lot of sense "quit worrying and record with what ya got."

two things to that.

1.  we (as in all four band members) really wanted to make this record entirely ourselves.  we knew we would need grant for some tracking, and that was as much external presence as we would allow till mastering.

2.  wagner and i have cut a handful of EPs and records in his basement.  all have turned out really cool, and we've really learned the room.

a handful of crappy mics, a couple good ones, a decent sounding basement room, and pro tools M Powered..........a hard rock record was born.

lyrically.....all i can say is that the face value is one thing, the metaphor is another and the intent is yet another.

i tried to step up to the plate/mic with something to say........perhaps shrouded in a bit of hard rock cliche......perhaps not.

a big complaint of ours (the four members of the band) is that so much of this kind of music (being more current hardcore or emo-core......to which we are not either) has little to nothing to offer lyrically and even vocally.

there was a big emphasis placed on actually having something to say.

typically we end our songs around the time i tell the guys i've got nothing else to say on that topic.  AND, why on earth should a hard rock song be any longer then 3:30.  i think the longest song on this record is 3:57

four tunes are under 3 minutes.

make your point, kick some teeth in and go home.

Man I just listened again on the Bose headphones. I love the separation. The toms sound great. The wide stereo feel and the attack on the toms reminds me of the Frengers album.

i couldn't get the first song to work, but i liked 'Demon Cobra'. parts of it reminded me a bit of another KC band and personal favorite, Coalesce (not the vocals, obviously). sounds very good too, i wouldn't have guessed it was done with anything with the words "m-audio" in it..

edit: er, i meant "m-powered"

Wow.

There is something very raw and honest in the mix and the performance. Yet not in the "this is just an excuse for a poor mix/performance" sort of way like some people have used  it (including myself). Because it's still very accurate and aggressive.

I hope that made sense. I'm a bit tired and awake on coffee.
