Title: Has anyone ever seen a Neumann U67 with this type of grill?
Post by: jimmymansfield on October 20, 2022, 12:29:45 AM
Hey guys,

Ive got a vintage u67 #396 and it looks like the grill is the same as a m49. I've never seen another one like this, and wanted to get some additional info to see if it makes it more collectable/valuable/etc. Also does anyone have any idea to date when it was made? I always assumed this serial number is low, but never looked into it. Thanks for your help!

I call it the "Reverse Grill" U67.
It was used on early versions for a few months, around 1961. Acoustics are different, due to different deflections of sound off the first (outside) mesh layer. Not better or worse, just different. I adopted that grill pattern for the Brauner KHE.

Curiously, the U60, the very first version of the U67, did not use the reverse grill, and reasons why it was even tried for a short time remain speculative.
