Title: Compressor and eq for vst worth a !@# ?
Post by: pipelineaudio on May 07, 2004, 04:53:02 PM
I have the UA stuff and some others, but anyone know of a compressor for dx or vst that actually sounds and or acts like a compressor? Hook a fella up, I am confused by these things

For a compressor, try blockfish.

I can also recommend you to check out the Sonalksis stuff. They have free demo versions of their plugs at their website. http://www.sonalksis.com

Cheers,
Henrik

I agree, Blockfish rocks for a track compressor.  Flexible and sounds very very good.

That "Camel Phat Free" whatever it is, also sounds pretty good.

For 2-bus or home-mastering comp, Endorphin is good, hard to use, but I like the MDA Multiband and MDA limiter, MDA dynamics is good.  In fact I dig the whole suite of MDA stuff and it's all good.

While talking about dynamic effects for VST, I have to mention Ruby Tube.  It's an interesting, addictive effect.  Try it on tracks, try it on the 2-bus.  Anything you want to "punch up".

I love when something free is really cool!
I liked the sound right away.
Anyway...I use Logic Audio on a G4, and that gave me some problems. First of all I couldn't select it from my pluginmenu unless I made the channel a stereo-channel. Secondly I discovered that the plug-in altered the phase. When used on drums it mudded the sound all up. I came around that by using a small helper plug-in called trackadvance, with this plug-in I could change the phase 3 samples which gave me a perfect result.
Anybody experienced this?

Im addicted to Nomad Factory stuff. Throw the limiter on a Drum Sub and proceed to limit!! Has a creat compressor too..Its all good dude. The waves L2 is a great spicer uperer if used in moderation..depends what you want to compress.. and how much.

I just started using it with a VST wrapper in DP and love it but as you stated it is latent and limited to stereo to stereo mode. Have you tried the PSPaudioware stuff? The mixpressor and the Vintage Warmer (much more than the name suggests) are great products, not transparent but very effective on the right source.

You know I like blockfish so much that solid VST support has become a requirement for my software selection for anything used for tracking.  After trying a dozen or more VST and DX compressors this is the only one that does it for me.  If it were not for blockfish, I'd have already switched to Linux for my DAW.

Of course the fish filets suite (blockfish, floorfish, spitfish) & the other free VST plugins from digitalfishphones are all no longer being supported.  Endorphin is a very good mastering comp but so flexible that you can easily get into a lot of trouble with it Wink  If you haven't got it, get it, before the free download disappears!  I have not found a use for THD but I'm sure someone will.

Try these guys:

http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/

They have a 15 band graphic EQ, a compressor, mastering limiter, and reverb that are a) free, and b) very good.  The EQ can be a bit touchy at times, but its really a good solution to many problems...
