Title: WUMP 27
Post by: KAyo on January 30, 2014, 04:09:54 PM
Hi ya all..

Hopefully, we've all stepped into 2014 comfortably and our ready for our very first WUMP of 2014!

I know, I am keen and quite ready for the jam.
Anybody has some tunes we could master etc.. PM me.

If one of us could secure a Classical piece to master, that would be exciting!

Thanks
KAyo

That would be great, I'll check around for a track too.  Just getting back into going to the Symphony lately, I love zero % harmonic distortion!

Touche' Dana..

Exactly my point. That vastness is so different to Master than something that's edging towards the event horizon. Getting that compression to breath right, picking that unique EQ and setting that delicate dither pass. Much excited!

Been chasing a classical piece since the past four WUMP's, always hoping to score one.

Hopefully, one of us bags that for this WUMP!

Let me know people. Thank you.

sounds like fun!  i just finished a saxophone solo album, i might be able to ask about it.  it's not a full symphony, but would be edging toward that classical theme...

Would really enjoy to work on a classical track for a WUMP

I have a piano guitar classical recording that I did a while back, and have a request out from a client who's looking through some original compositions that were done with two mic's. Not sure of the orchestration on those though.

Would very much like to have a listen to that Nick!

We already have a submission for a beautiful Classical Guitar piece that needs mastering and ready to go, if a suitable or more symphony like piece, isn't found.

Anybody else?

Cheers,
KAyo

We don't seem to have any more tracks submitted as yet, if Nick comes through, that would be great, otherwise we go with guitar classical.

Keeping you all posted.

WELCOME to WUMP 27 of 2014

WUMP is a group of engineers/ members of  the PSW forum, collectively challenging their engineering skills to the same piece of audio presented.

WUMP is also a great way to study; what you're attaining as an engineer in comparison to other engineers, right or wrong, or perhaps learning a thing or two from what others are achieving. It's an opportunity and a learning experience for all participating engineers, regardless of ultra-experience.

- what's most enjoyable about a WUMP?
Working towards a suitable master and comparisons between different masters.

- number of participants in a WUMP?
Upper limit is around  8 to 10max participants per group, to maintain a healthy and fruitful listening and reviewing experience.

- time between upcoming WUMP’s?
We aim to have a WUMP every three months or so.

- tech notes, do they work for you, and are they useful?
Participants have an opportunity to understand and gain from other peoples approaches, methods and tactics. Understanding the style, is brought to clarity in the mastering tech notes.

- what gear can one use to master the audio?
There are no restriction as to what a participant uses to gain a master.

More information is presented after the groups are sorted and organized.

Depending on the timeline, I may have to drop-out.  I'm in a rush (St Patrick's Day rush?!) with a lot of work and some extra curricular activities.

Is someone got shut out and wants to play, I'll bow out and offer the space.

Hey all,

A DropBox idea has been suggested to me, by Fletcher's team.

I think, it's a no brainer. A DropBox Wump 27 folder, now ready with the mix to share.
Please, PM me email addresses to begin sharing the folder.

Thanks
KAyo

PS: Dana, do stay, as I am keen to hear your master on this piece.

Haha, yes, do pride myself on a fast turnaround and had a slot this morning so went for it! I've no idea what is looked for in classical/acoustic jazz music mastering, so I just went with my intuition (i.e. as clean as possible with some very subtle sweetening). Anyway, all that can wait for the discussion thread...

Just as a side thought on approach, [without talking of gear/ settings] what were you thinking? I am thinking .. pure MD3? aka Digi only.

Who knows, maybe an analogue head.
But, the track sounds nice and full etc..Yeah
Thoughts?

I have listened to the piece (really nice btw.) only once, right after download, so my thinking is not well defined yet  :-\. However, with this type of music I always try to avoid da/ad conversion and compression, if possible. Let's see how it'll work out.
PS. I'll be submitting close to deadline too.

I wanted to use my D/A/D analogue chain to see if it was capable with this style of music! More minimal settings than normal, was hoping it would still be clean and true to the source, whilst adding some kind of euphonic edge, but I'll have to let all of you be the judge of that!
