Title: Room and gear pics...
Post by: bblackwood on March 03, 2011, 01:19:52 PM
I know that over the next few days the IT guys will be porting over a bunch of threads from the old software, but i figured I might as well kick off with a couple of threads I'd like to see - the first being a room / gear thread. While I've historically shied away from focusing on gear - as technique is FAR more important in mastering than the equipment - we're all proud of our rooms and equipment, so show us what you have!

Details are encouraged...

OK, since no one has replied yet, I'll dive in.

I'm working in a room which I inherited from the owner (who no longer does any of the mastering). He designed it and built it himself. Not a bad room, semi-decent dimensions and build-out, but definitely not a great room by any means.

It's (roughly) 14' wide, 17' long with 8.5' ceilings. Design is a pseudo-LEDE. Floors are (1960's original) oak hardwood on concrete, walls are triple Sheetrock on separate studs, ceiling is a drop-ceiling grid with foam panels, each backed with a square of drywall with a sub-floor built above.

I'm attaching several pictures of varying (poor) quality to give you a feel of the room. Honestly, I would love a better room. The "sweet spot" is like having massive headphones on, just too "zoomed in". I
almost wish I could move the desk back to where the back couch is because I get a more cohesive sound back there, but then there would be no place for the clients. (Most of my sessions are attended.)

Studio B at Terra Nova.  Also a room I inherited.  Roughly 28'x18'x9' (i haven't measured in a while).  the 9' drop ceiling has a very small impact on low end, and the actual roof above there is 20'. . .

Gear is based around the latest (last) dCS Converters. Sontec Mastering EQ, Neve Mastering EQ, SPL Pass EQ, Custom Muth BAX EQ, Kush Clariphonic, GML 9500 Mastering EQ, Manley Vari-MU Mastering, Chandler Limited LTD-2 Mastering, ADT Mastering Compressor, Dolby 740, Weiss DS-1 MKIII, Maselec MPL2 Peak and HF Limiter, Dangerous Master, Crookwood Mastering Console, Ampex 102 1/2" with JRF heads, Studer 1/2" & 1/4" Mastering Deck, Bryston Amps, Kranis custom designed speakers, pair of focal subs, Sequoia 10, Lynx AES16 and Lynx one. UAD-1 card.

I think I'm done gear wise. I don't need anything else... well maybe a tube EQ but there is none I want right now, well... maybe the EAR or the TMC... ok, I guess I'm not done.

Oh it's no mystery. It's the Dangerous Bax EQ http://www.dangerousmusic.com/mq.html (http://www.dangerousmusic.com/mq.html) prototype. I love it but the production model offers a few extras.

Funny you should ask...

Just finishing up the build on our new laboratory:

Construction photos here on my flickr, if anyone's interested:

The live room sounds fantastic, and the control room is on it's way to being 'finely tuned'.

Looking good everyone!  I'll upload a pic soon after I get my photographer friend over here to snap some new shots.  I got Sterling Modular to custom modify my "face up rack" to essentially turn it into half a Plan A.  Only 12 rack spaces but it is more than enough for my current setup.

Side note: The new forum is pretty slick!

Noah, room looks great, really love the feel of your space.

We've talked quite a bit over the years about the gear used in my room, hasn't really changed much, here's the front and rear of my space:

that pic is making me think the acid just kicked in.

here's a pic of my new room. turned out pretty ok for a beginner carpenter if i do say so myself. clients are happy and so am i. i've had the same gear for years now and would love some new toys, but the budget got spent on the room so i'm making do with what i have and it's fine.

Brad, I know there has been much discussion about all the different pieces of gear in your chain, however I don't think you've ever spoken about the chain as a whole. (If you have I don't ever remember reading about it.)

I know your transfer console can take devices in or out of the chain, but what is the order of your devices? Can you describe your reasoning as to why you choose to place some pieces earlier in the chain versus those that come later?
Title: Re: Room and gear pics...
Post by: bblackwood on March 11, 2011, 04:47:46 PM
Hey Allen, sure, no problem.

My basic chain would be DAC -> Crane Song Ibis -> BPEQ -> Davelizer -> Pendulum OCL-2 -> Crane Song STC-8 -> Wedge EQ -> ADC

I like the Ibis first as if I'm going to use the HPF, I want to get rid of the junk first. The BPEQ and Davelizer would be interchangeable in the chain, but I use the BPEQ most of the time now so it's next. I tried the compressors both ways and just feel that the STC-8 is more of an 'averaging' type compressor, while the OCL-2 is great for that 'grabby' sort of compression, and I preferred the STC-8 last. Finally, the Wedge, which was designed to fit between the last compressor and the ADC as a 'makeup' shaping EQ, which is does perfectly.

Not rocket science, just a mix of playing with it and how I feel about stuff philosophically.

I've changed a few things since taking this photo. Sold the SPL and Chandlers and added an API 2500, Foote P3S and a Sontec 250C (soon to have stepped switches). Otherwise mostly the same.

I really dig that center console monitor controller / insert switcher

Very helios console type of vibe.

Is it custom made into the desk?  Or does it have a back? .. could be table top mounted?
Title: Re: Room and gear pics...
Post by: Greg Reierson on March 11, 2011, 05:38:46 PM
That's a home brew. It's mounted to the sides of the racks and the guts are in an enclosure behind that faceplate. I like how it turned out.
Title: Re: Room and gear pics...

My basic chain would be DAC -> Crane Song Ibis -> BPEQ -> Davelizer -> Pendulum OCL-2 -> Crane Song STC-8 -> Wedge EQ -> ADC

Cool.

Seems like the general flow is most of the EQ'ing upfront, followed by compression (2 different flavors) with just a little touch-up EQ before the ADC.

I always imagined most folks with multiple EQ's and compressors would do some  sort of "EQ-comp-EQ-comp-EQ-comp" type of arrangement.

Hopefully others will post up their chain philosophies.

Ah, not in the picture either. I think they were out of the rack when I was having them recapped. I do use them once in a while. They're great for adding bottom and the Präsenz band is cool. Never really liked the top as much as other options.

Because of Cool Studio Mood LightingTM my room doesn't photograph so well.  Gonna get a decent flash for my camera soon, hopefully that will help.

I do like it.  What I really want, and have always wanted, is a bluetooth trackball but no one will make it.  This is the closest thing.  You definitely have to go into the preferences and disable the unnecessary gestures though.  Otherwise it will drive you insane.

Yea, I remember hearing about it.  The company disappeared pretty quickly, which didn't engender a ton of confidence.
I never got it because my brother ran out and got one immediately (he was editing a Reggae/Dub magazine at the time) and hated it.  Said it was super susceptible to interference.

Thanks for the compliments guys.  yes. I play with tunes while capturing. I also I play often & I love that guitar... by far the best acoustic I have ever played (Froggy Bottom).
The lamp was left dirty in the garage by the previous owner.. go figure.  FYI the lamp is analog it must go up to at leat 100khz ::)

yes they're handles. I set up the front and sides so they could be moved a bit to do some fine tuning.  The sides are mounted on giant home made hinges, after I finished up realized I need to get in and out of there to store some junk, junk with good absorption coefficients that is.

here's a pic of my new room....

I just started doing something similar with my keyboard & mouse, putting them on little stools beside my chair... I even put the monitor on a little hassock down in front of me so that it's out of the way of the speakers... kinda sucks a bit looking down slightly, but I prefer it to having the monitor off to the side. It's really nice to get rid of the desk & have a nice open space in front of you.

Really nice to see all these cool spaces, there are some really great ideas out there.

Comes in at a lower choice than other more "standard" choices.

I like it, pretty clean sounding for a valve circuit compressor, the GR is "proprierty"
Predictable and glues nicely, doesn't really do overly warm, just honest control really.

You wouldn't believe how much it cost to get that stuff built in reverse!

It's great processing stuff backwards.

You get really nice transients, even with a lookahead limiter!
You should try it some time.

Hello Ade - I see you have an MLA-2 and a 3. I just traded my 2 in for a 3 as I had an OCL-2 doing broadband comp duties. I'm wondering when I might begin to miss it - I'm sure I will, but do you find you're using the 2 less now?

Have to agree with you (and Ben and Macc) that the MLA-3 is in a class of its own ...

Cheers,

Eric

I meant "price" not "choice", lol.

Just getting into the EQ, it's good, cannot say anymore really as I take a long "break in" with new kit, you don't really know it until you have a had a lot of hours use so I'll leave it at that. Certainly more flexible than some factory stuff it seems. (smoother tops too)

Yeah, I hear god uses the MLA3, you are less than poo on a boot if you don't run the MLA3, how did all those great records get made without one?

Nice - what kind of speakers are those?

thanks Brad  ;)

those  Klinger Favre Studio 15A speakers are quite unknown but really worth a listen, they are hand made in France by Jean Jacques Baquet.
http://klinger-favre.blogspot.com/ (http://klinger-favre.blogspot.com/)

they have replaced a pair of PMC IB2s powered by 2 hypex UCD700, i had initially.
compared to those the timber are more true, sound stage is more stable and with more depth, bass is more controled but with a bit less extension (probably why i'll soon add some dedicated sub bellow them).

i could also compared them to a pair of atc 150 that i had for a test last summer in the room.
the atc 15" where too big for the room but the mids and highs where not as articulated as the studio 15. Thomas J. recently went here for a listen and was quite surprised.

they're globaly very true and extremely revealing, how real they sound on accoustic material particularly is quite astonishing

Nice!
Always a big fan of rooms with no front desk.
Really like that empty front end look, and with, only a chair at the helm.

Don’t know, if I’d have the guts or tenacity to go there myself, but, always in awe of people who do..
Refreshing!!

Also curious, why do you have the urge to move to a full blown desk, apart from the bleeding obvious ones tec..

Thanks for the nice words,
i don't really have to urge, it is just a feeling, it is a year and half now i'm with this ergonomy, it's a great  way to receive the music without anything in between, it's also great for the accoustic.
but sometimes it is a bit too "passive" position, it is quite complicated when tracks need a lot of work to sound right.

it's great to listen music once work is finished ;)

Hmm.. I feel ya.
When its on and more complicated than usual or needbe, for that set-up, it would get a little hectic and disruptive, not having the controls when required.
I empathize with you, for sure. It would be great, if mixes were top notch, and all you need were a couple of your go to boxes and boom! Out came a master!

Even Bob Katz has somewhat moved away from that set-up, as per some new pics, I noticed the other day.

I suppose you’d possibly buy one ready made, I hope to design and build one someday .. someday ;) (yeah right)  :o

I've thought about working with nothing between me and the monitors, but it seems that the compromise of a smallish desk is worth it..

I guess a small desk footprint, isn’t so bad after all. Especially, if the speakers have a good throw and power behind them, and the rooms respectfully designed etc.
For years, and even today, I have admired Glen meadows set-up with those angled soffit monitors.. With that kind of set-up, a desk wouldn’t worry me at all..
Bob Katz, spoke in high regard of that room.

Cheers,

Eric
MLA-2 gets used quite a bit, mainly for clean gain if someone just wants what they mixed, only louder.
MLA-2 and MLA-3 are very different animals with the former being optical and the latter being VCA.
I never use them together but I'll be keeping em both!

The Masterfonics rooms are Tom Hidley designs featuring Kinoshita monitors. Glenn could tell you all you wanted to know, although as he works at a difference facility now, I don't know how interested he'd be in discussing it.

"We offer our clients two stunning mastering rooms designed by Tom Hidley. The 28Hz monitoring environments feature Kinoshita/Hidley two-way monitors with TAD components and high level passive crossovers driven by bridged Cello Performance II amplifiers. The systems afford enormous headroom and accurate, fatigue-free monitoring."

I would love to hear these rooms for myself as they seem to be held in such high regard by other ME's.

Logic seems to say, "If these rooms really are that good why aren't there more rooms like them?" Are they too expensive to build? Are they really more a matter of taste? Is Tom Hidley and/or Shozo Kinoshita out of the business?

Yes still the ATC SCM50 ASL and REL 12" sub. Much has changed in terms of the positioning and signal flow probably since you were there, I have spent a lot of time getting the system to measure and sound right. The room looks really small in those pictures though!

Oh yeah, Robin's place is gorgeous. That small side rack on the right gave me a few ideas.. I'm probably bringing my synths into the studio, and I want to make it as small and unobrusive as possible. The rack could also hold CD players and such. Maybe it could even have wheels.

I'm currently finishing some of the cosmetic touchups. Perhaps I'll post a few photos next week.

thanks! Props to my acoustic architect (Michel Schreiber, ACM Akustik) for the idea of adding wood panels above and below the absorber and diffusor modules. I think that is a large part of what gives the room a unified look. Otherwise it'd just be acoustic modules stuck on the walls... Also creates nicely hidden cabelling tunnels.

Anyway, I'm planning to move lovation in the foreseeable future, and I keep pondering over whether to build a new room or move the existing one. I wonder, has anyone here ever moved an existing room 1:1 with the existing acoustics to a different place? What was your experience with the process?

Indeed that's something to worry about. One limiting factor in this would be (overseas) container shipping time. But yes, either the move would have to go a LOT faster, or one would have to work from another room in the meantime.

A rental room could be a solution, but there's always the setting up and learning curve. Taking the room down, shipping it, and assembling it elsewhere.. The schedule can never be too exact, I think.

How about just selling your current room, or perhaps renting it to an aspiring collaque?

Although there's always the worry that your brand kind of sticks to the old place. My similar worry, when I moved, was sorted on many different levels.

1) The owners of the studio agreed to not rent the room to another mastering engineer
2) One month after my move, a couple of radiators blew up and completely soaked the floating floor of my old room
3) The whole building was sold and everyone in it needed to move out ASAP

Phew!

It's gone already. I think they're building a small mixing room out of the stuff they have, but that's it.

The signs of the building changing the owner were already in the air while I was moving, but I certainly didn't expect things to roll out that quickly. Add the radiator that blew, and I consider myself pretty lucky.

Here's a few quick shots from my room.

The custom Towersonic stands are here, and the front end is almost finished. That plate under the screen needs a few more sticks of wood for a similar pattern to the walls, but that's about it. I put it there to hide the incoming air valve.

I've also been painting here and there. The lights are unfinished, but I've just ordered a couple of kewl wall lights that should take me 85% there.

Also attached is a shot from my Hypex amp. Sounds really good. After installing the stands, I'm really liking my room+speaker combo. I'll be happy for years with them.

I've booked a professional photographer for mid July. I'll have to build a few things before that to fill up the desk. New console+VU panel, at least.

Not at all. I've got text and icons pretty big on the screen, and the computer is mostly an editor, anyway. I really enjoy the screen far away, and usually shut it off.

For long editing sessions, a portable parallel screen could be an interesting thing to have, if it was completely wireless and could be tossed away when not needed.

Hi,

Here it is 75% Mastering and the occasional 25% Music Production, Recording, Mixing of Choirs and solo artists. Soon, I will inform here very good news...:)

The studio has completed 15 years and I have been mastering for 10 years.

The analog leap happened only 4 years ago.  And it has been great.

Next steps are bigger monitors, get rid of boards and one more analog eq.

I have to thank most of you all here for having shared with me lots of precious informations and helped me in an indirectly way, fine tune my stuff and techniques.

Special Thanks to Brad, DC, Steve, Jerry, Katz...

That is the live room. It has a terrific sound. Part is stone, assymetrical bricks, wood and very little foam in the ceiling.

We separated both rooms so as to have better lenght( ratios)  at the control room, where I spend all the time doing mastering or eventually, mixing.

Just a few weeks - it's bliss, and sounds like, well, nothing! Yes, I know I'm 'supposed' to have a similarly-profiled object on the other side etc., but I'm happy with it like this at least for the time being.

Forgive me if I've explained this here previously, but when the Sterling's shipment was delayed I got into the 'nowt between' habit and was surprised at how much worse it sounded with the console in the front: what you see is my answer, and I'm glad I did. There's a power bar still at the front that was supposed to service the console, that will go at the time of final acoustic tweaks quite soon - hopefully the missing carpet tiles will appear then too.

I'm in no hurry. What I have is (unexpectedly, it should be said) very wide-ranging in its application, and in that I think I've been extremely lucky. Any additional gear will likely appear slowly, though I would like to check out the Bax and 5500 EQs and the Foote compressor at some point.

Otherwise, plans are now afoot to see if other speakers comfortably beat what I already have. They'll have to go some though: the AMLs are happy in their new home and sound larger than they look. Once I realised that in this particular space they'd need to be closer to the back wall than one would normally expect, things really started happening.

That literally is, a table of tone.
Well...That all depends on how good the mixes are? :)
I have it that way for two reasons.

The racks are to the right of me so I can EQ, etc, without leaning in or moving from where I'm listening from.
I can also easily take the rig to other mastering rooms or studios for high end tape archiving, etc.

I respect that, there is no need to have an entire rack ful of gear really. Just well considered kit that does the job as you need it to do.

In saying that I have purchased an "odd" compressor.

Joe Meek SC2.2, for mastering it is far from odd though, it has been back to Ted Fletchers
workbench for some much needed love.

Oh and it's very green.

Hi, this my room.

Hi Ross,
Do you mind me asking what the side rack is, and how the ergonomics of having the keyboard and mouse are?  I'm thinking of going that route as well.

I love the large space, plenty of elbow room there!

Title: Re: Room and gear pics...
Post by: rossn on July 01, 2011, 07:31:07 PM
Dana,
I made the side rack. I have a wood shop and I also design speaker cabs as a hobby. (www.rndcabinets.com) The monitor is for Penguin and Smaart live analysis software so I'm not using the keyboard much. I wanted to get a small (9") monitor, but they're crazy expensive so I just used one I had around. The rack has a CD player, Masterlink, Big Ben etc. in it.

I i figured I might as well kick off with a couple of threads I'd like to see - the first being a room / gear thread.

A couple of pics from a slightly dodgy camera and and even more dodgy cameraman. Lack of rack screws indicates experimental placement.

The red stuff on the walls are actually not the walls but are Andy Munro-designed acoustic treatment panels.

My monitor speakers (active ATC 50's) are of course ... behind me (I've worked like that for 20 years and have learned to rotate my ears).

Cheers,

Eric

Hi Eric, it looks considerably more compact is that a big difference?

I though you had those new trapezoidal electrostatic loudspeakers for a moment and the dogs appear to be perfectly positions to absorb a little upper bass.

Everyone seems to be moving space at the moment.

Hello Barry - the speaker/listener distances are the same and the reduced space has made a lot less difference than I thought it might (it measures pretty well: Andy Munro's acoustic modules are very effective): the bass is actually tighter and more extended here as it used to disappear a bit in the other place.  On a re-negotiation the old Barn is available to us again, and we're discussing a sharing option with another user which means I can work there maybe 2 or 3 days a week, but I'm getting a lot of work done here and so I'm less inclined to move back permanently.

Cheers,

Eric

It is very interesting what can end in good results.

An eq, a compressor, a DAW for some and some peoples studio looks like a 747 fight deck.

The same goes for common items I see in mastering studios that there is no way
I would entertain. Nowt as queer as folk.

sure it is :), thomas did the design and the result exceeds my wildes expectations!
the suite is fully floated, 50m2 outer shell, 28m2 inner shell..wich is quite on the small side
but  i usually work unattended or have only the producer here...up to 3 people in the room still feels comfy.

Can you tell us about your gear?

monitoring:

N802s, 2x 12"custom rythmikaudio subs, linkwitz riley filters
taking over at 23Hz (at the -6dB point). system is down -3dB at 16Hz
bass response is within +/-3dB (no smooothing) under 100Hz

desk left side bottom to top:

monitor controller

 24 step attenuator plus 4 coarse settings (+10dB, 0dB, -18dB, -32dB)

cut left, cut right, phase invert right, mono (so pushing phase and
mono together lets you hear side signal)

 VU cal switch (0VU= -20, -14, -12, -10, -8, -6dBFS)
 solid headphone amp

3 inputs, 3 outputs (1 is feeding the mains, 2 feeding the subs, 3 might feed
some auratones or boombox in th future...dunno)[/pre]

Baxandall Equalizer

based on the classic 50ies design, but calculated down to work well with a normal opamp instead of tube.
switched, 1dB steps

the magic silver box

where most guys have their LTD-2s I have my 1290 amps with volume control
it does something to bass I cant find somewhere else

converters

right side:

classic T-filter EQ
classic ssl comp, heavily modified for mastering (additional 1.3 and 1.5 ratio makes
all the diffrence for this comp in mastering, extended attack and release times)

2x 10" HAMI display (1 is extending the mastering computer...good to have eq plugs etc
in front while sitting in the sweet spot. 2nd display belongs to a minimac running audiofile
engineerings spectre. its nice to have and it impresses clients, but its usually off since it influences
decisions

thats pretty much it

next thing to do is a transfer console (I/O gain, 8 inserts)...ah and fabric to the walls :-)

i did spend several weeks testing various finishes and eventually ended up blending 2 different stains to match the color.  in the dim studio lighting, they do look close, but in sunlight or any reasonable ammount of light the desk is not red enough. . .  i'm happy how it turned out.

i used 1/2" MDF for a lot of the rack space area, 1/2" plywood for the more structural components, and mahogany hardwood for the side accents and desktop.

It looks like you used some ideas from the Sterling Plan C model.

mmhmmm ... Masterpiece.   Tastey.

Is that a MaxxBCL ? . .. how do you like that? I've thought of it as an L2 replacement ..

but I always seem to run my L2 in un-linked mode :: which I think the BCL is always linked?

Is the comp any good?

can't imagine the maxxbass physcoacoustic stuff gets much use? .. or is it that 'evil magic fairy dust' for heavy dubstep?
Title: Re: Room and gear pics...
Post by: Treelady on September 26, 2011, 11:02:03 AM
I pulled the MaxxBCL because you can not unlink it.   I was not using the Renn Compressor or the Max Bass stuff nor were the transformers in the analog section were getting any use from me.  (They are, however, wonderful for live sound applications.  To be fair, that box is really a live sound reinforcement unit.  And in those situations, its like taking an assault rifle to to a knife fight!).

So, yeah, that MaxxBCL is now a regular L2 Hardware unit.  The Massive Passive is now an NSEQ-FF and the STC-8 is now an OCL/2.   The mixing guys here steal my s$(# (MP and STC8 "walked" down the hall...), so I'm going to have to start locking stuff down...

Hope that helps!

It's gonna happen. I thought of a use for it that will actually make me money! I wanted one to do the console faceplates but it would be a little (cough) extravagant for that. I expect a steep learning curve. I'm buying a turnkey system so it should only be my incompetence holding me back. I'm going to evaluate some CAD/CAM software for the next couple of weeks to see what I want and can afford. I have a friend who is a graphic designer in my building who can help me evaluate the software and identify potential pitfalls. I also need to talk to the machinists about the CAM part of the software(s).

Sorry for the OT

I plan on cutting mostly aluminum and hopefully 18ga steel for chassis. I may have to get a different spindle or modify the router for slower speed. It specifically says non ferrous metals so it may not be possible. I don't like working with wood so there will be none of that. I will do FR4 phenolic PCB material. I don't have an etch tank so that would need to be done elsewhere.

I don't plan on hanging out a shingle. There are only so many hours in the day and mastering pays better. I won't spill the beans about the business idea in public yet.

I've been keeping half an eye out for what's available. I'm pretty much sold on http://www.k2cnc.com/shop/proddetail.asp?prod=KT-2514S-09&cat=26

I've been looking at the components for a little while too. Linear bearings, lead screws, method of construction, ect. K2 uses very nice parts and build quality at a good price. There are some Chinese ones that look nice but I like having product support a phone call away. This one is as rigid as similar sized ones that are floor standers.

I'm spec'ing servo motors, not steppers. I don't trust steppers for tight tolerances.

You've seen the stuff already, but since it's been a year since the construction of the new room went on, and also because mindless repetition is often the best comedy, I took a few shots.

Left, from top to bottom: Weston VU meter panel, Knif Audio Pure Mu compressor, FCS P3S prototype, the Barry Porter parametric equalizer.

Right, top to bottom: Weiss DAC-2, Crane Song HEDD192, LCEQ2, a passive EQ, the passive transfer console

I've installed an ATC EC23 MKIII crossover since the last shot, buit a new transfer console+VU panel and also pulled the speakers a little back from the front wall. All of these made a lot of difference in the quality of it all. Love it!

Here's a pretty lousy shot, but should give you some insight. Monitor/process sources, mute/mono switch, separate (resistor buffered) meter feed, selectable either pre or post.

The insert system is pretty clever, if I may so say. My previous console had 6 inserts, but I really just used one. The middle insert holds my core chain, with the odd unit in bypass. Since I use most of the stuff anyway, I saw no reason to go back and forth in cable with them, so it's all direct patched.

Inserts 1 and 3 can take paths A and B, each. If I want to add something extra to the chain, it's most likely this EQ or that compressor, not all of the stuff at the same time. This is what I'm using these inserts for. For example, the upcoming NTP EQ will most likely find its place in insert 1.

The FCS compressor is just a prototype built by Roger. It's going to have a few mods too, very soon. I use it in maybe 2/5 jobs. When it's used, it's golden. The Knif compressor is what I still love. It is just good for a compressor hater like myself.

in conjunction with Meniscus Audio. The chain Is simple and sounds great. Metric Halo ULN-8, Buzz Req 2.2
Mastering, Foote P3S ME, Dangerous Bax. Various Daws and software.

Hey Michael,

I emjoyed your previous postings about your speakers and now seeing your room, I dig the set-up you have got for yourself.  I'd be interested to hear how you selected the layout of the room, in terms of rack vs. desk and placement/selection of the screen.

Thanks,

Kevin

Thanks Kevin!

I first wanted to get the screen out of the way of the speakers. I.E. more flat as I could here a difference.
I typically make my adjustments with the right hand so I tuck in to the side of the rack. We will see if I
keep it this way. It was fun to fabricate rack so there may be a desk in the future! On a side note the speakers
are crazy good! like electron microscopes but no fatigue what so ever. The thing that used to rub me wrong with
the dunlevy's is they sounded hard to my ears. I believe this level of tech makes the job of a ME much easier....

Best,

Michael

Happy New Year everyone!

I moved rooms over Christmas, and I'm loving the new place. My work has definitely come up a notch already. Thought I'd share.

And as one of the privileged few that's heard it, I can tell you it sounds the canine appendages in there. Same builders as for my room, Pro Music.

Thanks Nigel - really appreciated! I'm enjoying this room more and more every day - Paul at Pro Music certainly knows his onions.

Luke at Luna Sound has another of these, AFAIK intended for recording as well as mastering  - c'mon Luke if you're reading this, how about sharing some pics?

Thanks, JT. It's a 55".

Here I finally set my viewing needs with "just" one 37 and one 27.

I was using one 40 + one 19 on a MAC Pro and one  17 connected to an old and noisy G4 800 QS.

The G4 was loudly boring and the room looked more like Kirk´s enterprise control room.

Yah, my Mac monitor is the ACD (20"). The reason I have a 55" on the wall for the DAW is because it's 10-12' (3-3.5m) away - did some math and came to the conclusion it gives me roughly the same visual area at that distance as the 20" did off to my right.

I've been looking into this too - do you notice any change of sound in the room, Brad?

No, but this monitor is well behind the mains (~30") and the entire front wall is already reflective (per Northward's design). If the front wall was absorptive or diffusive there would be an increased chance of audible change, but in some extended listening before and after I can hear no change.

I was going through this thread again.....some amazing rooms here!

My basic chain would be DAC -> Crane Song Ibis -> BPEQ -> Davelizer -> Pendulum OCL-2 -> Crane Song STC-8 -> Wedge EQ -> ADC

Brad, I noticed you have a new 'VSS' shelving EQ.  I'm curious as to where you (typically) have it positioned in your chain.

Nice one Steve!
I’ve said it before. Big fan of the no table set-up rooms.

Someday, would like to give that a whirl.

Cheers,
