Title: bad analog 2-track, good mastering deck?

I noticed when taking a project mixed to a Studer A810 (noisy fucker, now needs a new capstan motor) to several good mastering engineers that when flat transfer ref lacquers were made off of a good mastering deck (2 cases of modded A80's, 1 modded ATR) that good stuff showed up that my A810 didn't play back (not noise related).  I now have a working Tascam BR20 for the moment, which isn't exactly blowing me away on playback.  How much could I expect tapes made on the Tascam to sound awesome when mastered off a great deck?

This is a really tough question to answer, since it's all a bit subjective... but I would say the best way to find out if it does what you want it to or not is to try it out... If you are mixing to any other source, mix to both, then send both sets to the mastering engineer and let them decide.  Or go there yourself and a/b it.
