Title: What Are You Riding?
Post by: djwaudio on October 11, 2010, 02:38:21 PM
Happy Columbus Day to all here in the US.  Even though I'm working today, it's a holiday for the banks and schools.

I'm seeing a lot of motorcycles on the road today.  Envious, since I'm waiting for my client to arrive, I got to wondering what all the MEs out there ride.

I know John Scrip cruises a sweet Harley, Trevor Sadler is a hard-core track rider, Chuck Ainlay rides a BMW GS, Goe Gastwirt rides a BMW RT, and I ride a BMW K bike. I know there are some Ducati fans out there too.  Tell us about your ride!

I usually ride this between my apartment and the studio -
http://www.ohgizmo.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/nyc_bus.jpg

...but MTA budget cuts eliminated B24 service on the weekends - so I take this then ....

http://fortgreenebk.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/g-train.jpg

Somehow I think that wasn't the answer you were looking for though  Razz

Guess if I was going to get something simply for the style of it I'd go with a Studebaker Avanti (shot taken by myself at the Laughlin Casino's vintage car museum when I was there this past August):

... but have a feeling I'd much more likely end up on something like a Puch so I could join the "Moped Army"  Very Happy

when I counted myself as California this was my ride: Saab 900 SE V6 Convertible
http://www.auto123.com/97photo/saab/900conv2dr-s.jpg

*sigh* I still sometimes think selling that car was a mistake ... if nothing else changing from leather seats, walnut dash, and a V6 took a bit of adjustment when I came to NY with it's plastic subway, and sneaker power. But all that looked great when I left for tour right after, I mean NY is better than a bus after all ..

When I use to commute to the college it was on a Schwinn 15 Speed Sierra bicycle or a Honda Trail 90 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_CT90 or with my feet. Now my commute is done in socks and amounts to walking from my living space to my mastering room.

5.3 liter v12 to go the 1.8 miles to the studio.

I was banned from motorcycles at an early age after crashing badly into a tree in the woods and also taking out a relatives pool on a tractor. To add insult-my dad restores for fun and has a number of BSA's.

ah yes, bikes....

first one is  my 1972 R75/5 Toaster, picture was taken in the Kit Carson Nat'l Forest in New Mexico.  Award winning bike in shows, it's not for sale and rides like new.

for whatever reason, it's only allowing me one picture upload so I'm going to spam the list with two more  posts.

ah yes, bikes....

second on is my 2000 HD Road King, picture taken upon delivery in Wichita Falls, TX. Sold the bike in 2005 for more than I paid for it, the true meaning of "Ride Free".  Not bad as farm equipment goes but HD are pretty, not particularly sophisticated riding machines.

third one is my 1999 R1100RT, picture taken here at the house. This is my competition bike; Iron Butt Association #11403, Waltz Across Texas Rallies 2001, 2002, 2004, 2004 and a number of other competitive LD events; helping run the Wild Goose Chase Rally this coming weekend with the BMW Club of Houston annual gathering.

I know John Scrip cruises a sweet Harley (snip)

Just upgraded to an even sweeter Harley a couple weeks ago --

Upgraded to the new frame / fat rear rubber, pizza box and ABS.

That new frame is ridiculous...  I was expecting to like it, but I wasn't expecting to be smitten with it.  Never imagined a heavy cruiser that handled like a Porsche...

index.php/fa/15595/0/

It's an Electra Glide Classic, but I started tweaking right off the bat so now it resembles the new Ultra Limited (except for the 103 and the considerable $5-6k savings, of course).

And yes, I pulled the fairing and installed my J&M 7.25 3-ways the day after I rode it home.  I didn't buy the thing for the stereo, but I suppose having it actually sounding decent is a plus...

Motorcycles!

I love them.  I only have bikes, no cars.

At the moment, I only have three:  two custom Harleys (a softail and a 1200 sportster) and my 'daily commuter':  a Suzuki GSX-R 1000 which is in true superbike trim: head done, Yoshi valve kit, cams, electrics and other goodies.

But, my true love is the Sportster which is now in full cafe racer trim:  clip-ons, rear-sets etc.

See ya on the road!

Although I started out on this one:
http://www.bergenteknomafia.com/pics/mc/sogn2.JPG
.. and it was a great bike;

the BMW F650GS was my big motorcycle love:
http://bergenteknomafia.com/pics/mc/stolsheim1small.jpg
Cross continent riding, gravel fun, passenger rides, track days, couriering.. There didn't seem to be anything it didn't do well.
Except going fast straight ahead. I'm a cornering sort of person, so it turned out to be less of an issue than I suspected.

Alas, as this was my day job:
index.php/fa/15597/0/
motorcycling grew less and less interesting over the years. Couriering on a motorcycle was a bore compared to the liberty one can take on a pedal bike.. So I kept on pedalling and got enough two wheel action as it was while working. The lack of a local race track was also a heavy influence. Silly lean angles doesn't work well in the long run if staying on public roads.

The current avatar pic was the retirement gift to myself after 8 years of street riding:
http://bergenteknomafia.com/pics/mc/bike2C.JPG

Have spent half the riding time off the beaten path since then. Slowly getting better at handling silly steep angles and strange obstacles. It's light enough to be fun while riding up the ~1500 feet local mountains and heavy duty enough to take the beating while slipsliding down again on the near downhill style tracks. Off roading gives much the same extactic joy as track riding used to do on the motorbike!

Lastly, as this is a thread for riders:

Stelvio pass in the Alps. 48 hairpins on one climb! Smile

To [mis]quote George Orwell, 'Two wheels good, four wheels bad'

My commute to the studio is a round trip of about 15 or so miles. I really like to cycle as often as I can, it means I arrive alert and oxygenated. The ride home after a long session is a great mind cleanser and refresher too.

Of course, I ride motorcycles too, so if it's my turn to pick up groceries and cook dinner for the family I travel on this:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4044/5074187849_f1e1fff9ee_z.jpg

I do love Ducatis, and this one is the best bike for two up travel I've ever had [and I've had plenty] Ridiculous acceleration braking and all round handling. Plus room for a change of clothes and shoes!

My road bike is Italian too...

@ John: panniers on the trek? What would Lance say!

@ Andreas I have a 650 GS as my winter motorbike.  I've ridden the Stelvio pass and quite a few other alpine passes. Always awesome.

Thanks!  Very Happy

I was thinking exactly the same thing as I was reading this thread. I always wear plugs on distance rides and at the track... for short scoots around town sometimes I don't.

Wisconsin is a helmet optional state, North Carolina requires one... I always wear one no matter what.

Yea, EveAnna is a rider... interestingly enough she owns (or used to own) a Honda Hawk 650... a darn cool motorcycle (the start of the "naked" sport bike)... and has had service done by a friend of mine, JD Hord... who specializes in Hawks and Ducatis....  anyway, a colliding of words for me.

Always fun to see what hobbies people on here have... after all, we have to have something to do when we're not in the studio!

best,
t
