Title: A second Eq :Millenia ,TFletcher, API, Manley, Avalon
Post by: Alécio Costa - Brazil on August 21, 2008, 10:56:43 PM
Hi,

I am thinking of a second EQ for my  chain in a close future.

You advices have been very useful during my gear choices, once I am very far and cannot test allt his stuff.

So... what has come to mind:
1)Ted Fletcher P9
2)Avaln 2055 (too pilow?)
3)API 2500
4)Millenia (too few bands?)
5) Manley MP (too expensive?)
Any other ideas?

Budget: towards U$3000.

At the moment, gear list  is set like this:

Analog Comp: Pendulum OCL2
Analog EQ:   Crane Ibis     (some boosts, colouring)
a/d d/a: 02R96 >> soon upgrading to Hedd 192

ITB further processing:
PSP Neon HR Linear Phase  (mostly for cutting)
PSP MasterQ               (idem)
PSP Xenon limiter         (first stage limiter)
TC MD3 TDM limiter        (final stage limiter)

Daw: PT HD Accel PCI-E
Monitoring: Dynaudio BM6A MK1
Cabling: Santo

Thanks, Chuck. Smile
In fact it is not exactly a Deja-Vu because now I am aiming an Eq that might  "marry with the Ibis EQ" or even let me eliminate some digital plug-ins.

At the time I wrote the other thread I still did not have any hardware eq. Sad

Thanks for the tips. Three folks recommended me the P9. DC, you and a guy fromG S.

I have been informed  there is one P9 at ebay.

Before I got my Masterpiece II, I had the IBIS and Millennia NSEQ-2. I think they work great together and compliment each other well!

Bruce

a) Bruce, which brand is this Masterpiece II?

b) Did you use the factory Millenia or the modded version?

Thanks

How many bands of eq are there on the/your piece?

Do you ever use any additional eq?

Best Regards
Patrik

Hi, PAtrik. Many thanks for your help!

Yes, I am geting rid of the AD DA of the 02R96 ( frankly I do not find it that bad, compared to the 192 I/O, 96 I/O and Apogee Rosetta 200). I am very close to picking a hedd 192.

I was informed that the BM15As do not translate very fine on mids. In fact, several people told me that.

I do not hae the budget for BeW 802s, but Lipinskis 505 with a velodyne sub could be a good choice, right?

My room has pretty good acoustics. Ethan Winer, John Sayers and Wes Lachot gave me precious tips and helped me calculating some stuff.

As I still co-produce some albums and occasionally rent the studio for producers and bands, some things can not be changed copletly.

My market oscilates a lot, so it is like 50% production/renting and 50% mastering.

And until past 6 months ago I was mastering entirely ITB!LOL

BTW...How is the Manley Massive Passive?
Too dark? A nice match for the Ibis?
Better an API? Drawmer?

Millenia EQ NSEQ2: $3800 (a bit expensive for so few bands)
Manley Massive Passive: $3450

I will have to wait a little bit more to go with Lipisnkis and BeWs. Sad

I will check also the BM15A and the C3s from Dynaudio.

I really like the BM series.

All I can say is that the quality of my work went 100% up at an instant when I switched to a new room and got rid of my BM6A's.

The Questeds work well now and my work translates, but I am expecting another improvment when I finish my new speakers with ATC bass+mids. It's going take a while to get'em tuned..

I personally would absolutely upgrade on acoustics, monitoring, physical layout, converters & all before thinking of another EQ. I could work on one good EQ all day long, but I would have some trouble if I needed to take 2nd quesses with the soft upper mids of the BM6A's.

Yes,I got the same feeling on the sweet upper mids of the BM6As.

They are exactly the opposite of my previous(crappy) monitors: The MonitorOnes MK1/Mk2. They hurt in the 1.8k/6k.

The Masterpiece has 3 bands of Peak EQ, Hi-shelf and Lo-shelf EQ's, a Hi pass and Lo pass filter for main module.
I've never needed another EQ for correction but typically use the hi or lo shelf of the Millennia for a different color.

Bruce

The Weiss EQ1 is an incredible piece, don't pass it by just because it is digital.  They are about $4k.  Talk to me in about two weeks, I may have a used Massive Passive available if you're interested.
