Things are looking up even in this economy. Our video business is growing and so is our audio production and mastering.
We have a lot of projects in house currently and we are getting into some areas we did not do previously like mixing and some voice over work for commercials and rap music.
We have also started to do some some radio production work on a new "environmental" one minute show and are currently shopping it around to content providers.
Diversification is the name of the game for us and we continue to find new areas that we have the skills and the background to do well in.
How are others here handling this economy??? Are you also diversifying??? What areas are you getting into??? Inquiring minds want to know. :)

Back in 1972 at Cal State I first heard the line:
"Too many mixers, not enough fixers".
It was true then, more so today. Like in that 1970's sci-fi movie when they ask, "why do you keep the old guy around?" and the answer is "because he knows how to fix the machines".
The repair/service biz is booming now because many don't have the funds to purchase new equipment. Therefore, old gear needs to be kept running.
As for manufacturing, I have a few projects done yet on hold. I'm awaiting for the economy to turn before jumping back in.
As the Gambler says; "You got to know when to hold 'um, know when to fold 'um".

For me specialization has been the key. I started down that road with the lathe 10 years ago and am continuing with the A/B console. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be nearly as busy if I hadn't pursued vinyl and catered to a loosely specific clientele.
When the economy was 'great' I was broke. Now I'm not. I like knowing a little bit about a lot of things but for work I like being a specialist.

I got an email from an audio school yesterday asking about internships. I said no interns but if you have anyone who can solder and is interested in disk cutting I'll certainly talk to them (and probably pay them). I have a feeling I won't be getting a response.

As weird as it seemed at first, when the economy took a crap, my business started soaring. My theory is that there's a direct correlation to how bad things are economically, to how much people put energy into things that make them feel better. Not to mention people with less work, have more time to make music. Music is a bit like alcohol during the Great Depression. ;)

I'm not diversifying, I'm getting right with my maker. Thomas posted something positive, a sure sign of the apocalypse.
Just razzin' ya' Thomas--someone had to do it. ;D

I am also glad for you.
Things have been going very nicely for me recently, it's up and down as it is for everyone but mainly up and for longer and longer sustained periods, I think we have turned the corner with the financial downturn. Well it seems that way anyway.
