Title: IMP17 begins
Post by: j.hall on March 31, 2008, 10:14:42 AM
the RAR is uploading now.  it's 217 meg, and it will be up in about 64 minutes from now.

24 bit 48k wav files.  i included the samples i used and all the edits.

you have any choice of three options on this one.

1.  mix the song how you want to (which means you will not listen to my mix at all)

2.  match my mix

3.  beat my mix

give it a bit to upload, then grab it and begin.  you have one week.  next monday it's submission time.

ENJOY!!!!!

(i will be away from a computer most of today, if there are RAR problems some one will need to call me)

Splendid J.

Hopefully I'll have some time to invest in this one.

Great work, as always!

Are you going to send your mix to the people who want to listen to it? How do you know someone isn't hearing it for ideas?

first off, if you "beat" my mix, i'll be stoked.

secondly, my mix is included in the RAR.  i'll think i'll have a pretty good idea if some one submits to the "DIY" submission and has ripped my mix off.

trust me, it's not hard to pick out a copy cat in something like this.

Nice work J.!  Mix sounds great.  A little darker than I'm used to from you, but really really great work.

my mix is dark intentionally.  i wanted the top end to get sculpted in mastering.  i'll post the master later so you can hear how it developed.

J. i know you use a compressor on the master fader. and this time i will use that approach to match your mix. can you explain i little more about this. i ask because this seems akward to me, settinp up a compressor at the very beginning without having mixed the song.

DANG IT.  you guys are right.  i missed an edit on that part and it ditched the whole phrase.

let me fix it and put a new RAR up.  you can copy and paste if you want to keep working.  i'll have something up soon.

i'm struggling with telling you how to do this as you are trying to copy my mix and this is giving you at least one key to the building.

i will tell you this about general setup.  pick you attack and release time and set you threshold to 0 or something that seems appropriate to your typical operating.

as the mix develops you will need to continue adjusting the threshold to keep the comp from getting to out of control.

i'm not going to pass out specific settings.
Title: Re: IMP17 begins
Post by: Gabriel F on April 01, 2008, 01:55:04 AM
i dont want specific settings. just an idea about what to look for( do you want mostly pumping or dinamic control? or something else?).
this is a new way to mix for me. and it seems that you have to set up the release and attack times by experience more than by ear.
i set it to do only 2 db max of gain reduction and the attack not too fast to let some punch come thru. i will adjust it later to make it pump i little.

yes

dry?

the sample is dry.

you didn't get the original kick for 3 reasons.

in order:

1.  i made one drum edit that i didn't feel like recreating on the original kick track.
2.  the original was recorded with an SM-57 (it's all we had) through a sans amp bass driver as a last ditch effort to get a 57 to do something that resembled a kick drum.  it's horrible, it had to be replaced.
3.  for the people trying to copy my mix, i thought this was much more fair then giving them a total piece of garbage kick sound and leave wondering what sample i used and how they were going to match it.

deal with it.

don't adjust it later, do all adjustments earlier.  mixing through the thing will have you mix sounding the way you want with those settings.  if you change them later all your balances will be off and you'll blame the compressor and not yourself.

i wouldn't hit it more then 4dB.....but that's just me.

2 is a great place to start.  as you mix and the gain reduction goes up, adjust your threshold and makeup gain accordingly to keep things feeling good.

Downloaded, imported, gave a quick listen to the raw tracks.  Punched the ex's cat in the throat a few times, listened again, and started mixing.......

I like.... just the right amount of angry in this tune......

i decided that for those who are going to submit to the "beat j.hall's mix" submission the judging should be a little more maticulous.

Brad Blackwood has agreed to "judge" that submission thread.  Dave McNair may join him as well.

mastering engineers listen differently then us mixers, they aren't distracted by a cool sounding snare drum.  overall tonal balance, impact, density, stereo image, depth of field......these are the things that they are listening for.

This song was a blast to pull up...it's like Helmet meets Prong in a dark alley with a short skirt on (or something like that)...but NOISY!

I'll definitely be interested in hearing how these all stack up...I'm guessing this will be a really diverse collection of mixes regardless of trying to copy j.'s mix or not!

My take is that this is the band that a nascent Ian McKaye would be in if Jaz Coleman got a hold of him and they moved to NYC and hung out with Unsane.

hard to say...the vocals remind me of Tommy Victor for some reason, though...not totally, but there's something in the delivery that hits me similarly.

Good call on the Tommy Victor-esque vox (specifically the chorus back ups).  I'm really digging this song as well.  I immediately thought of Barkmarket & Helmet.  I'm looking forward to finding out who the band is (at the end of the IMP) so I can check out some more of their stuff.

I'm opting for the 'beat J's mix' route.  Here's my prediction:

BTW - That's my mix in the black trunks.

the band is Hundred Years War, which happens to be my band, and that happens to be me yelling and screaming and playing one of the guitar parts.

this band's entire goal was to have fun while ripping off helmet, quicksand and unsane.

our 10 song record comes out pretty soon.  this track is on it.

One question, I think mr. j.hall needs to decide this.
Are we allowed to upload 2 version, one only mixed and the other one also mastered? Because I noticed while going through submissions from earlier IMPs that some mixes are way too hot (IMO).

Post by: Greg Dixon on April 07, 2008, 06:07:23 AM
Well this has been fun and a challenge. I went for the match J's mix option. I've often referenced other mixes for style or tones over the years, but never tried to match another mix exactly.

The other two options would have taken less time....

I'm interested in uploading a mix and a master as well. I'm often asked to master as well as mix, so it'd be helpful to get some feedback on that too.

I submitted two versions.

One was a last minute idea I had for a technical shift (putting a transient designer before a 33609 drum mult to shorten the duration of the hits and tighten the rhythm) that had kind of a subtle but real impact.  Of course it felt good since it was a new idea and sounded different. But I don't know that things you do at the last minute really match your instincts. The shorter duration has more snap, but in the morning, I don't know if it isn't missing the gel that the other did.  Or that anyone will notice or care.  I suppose in the real world, I'd let the mastering guy make the call and maybe do edits since there are probably sections that work better in the two forms.

Anyway, they are there.

Has something changed on the IMP prosoundweb server? CuteFTP keeps crashing when I try to download mixes and I get an error when I try to upload my mix.

I had no problems doing this on previous IMPs, with the exact same cuteFTP settings. (I skipped IMP16) Also downloading the IMP17 rar file went without a hitch.

Will there be submission threads posted by the end of the day?

I don't want to not follow the guidelines this time.

Wink

Edit: I realized upon starting to listen to mixes that I need to know the intent of the mixes since I was listening to all of them from the standpoint of doing a regular IMP (which is the way I mixed) as opposed to comparing to the J mix.

submit more then one if you want to.  hell, put a mix in all three threads if you have time to do that many mixes.

sorry for the delay guys, my day went a bit crazy on me this morning, i'm just now sitting down at my desk.
