Title: guilty pleasure......
Post by: j.hall on August 11, 2008, 09:44:36 PM
i find this statement funny simply because i don't ever feel guilty about anything i listen to for enjoyment.  however, we all know what the term means.  so lets hear it.

what is your current guilty pleasure.

mine......saving abel and seether are getting a lot of spins.  seether simply because it sounds sick, and the tunes are pretty catchy, i blame CLA for making it sound so good, now i'm addicted.

saving abel, well, a friend of mine co-wrote, produced, tracked and mixed it.  so i grabbed the two singles and it's catchy and pretty solid as well.

neither one of these bands would ever make it to my regular rotation, but like heroin, i'm hooked for now.

Killing Joke's Pandemonium is one of those listen to whenever discs for me.

No such thing as a guilty pleasure.  If you enjoy it, don't feel guilty for doing so!

Guilty here, too. Check out their 2003 Eponymous disc with Dave Grohl on drums. Talk about ear candy for the mentally unbalanced (that's me!)

My pop side history is (partially) as follows:

Todd Rundgren
Huey Lewis
Jane's Addiction
Foo Fighters

Please don't judge me! Shocked

Oh geez, I totally forgot the Smashing Pumpkins

Lol... dude, don't knock em until you try em.  Laughing

Listen to the bass on dancing queen again some time...  and the super stacked harmonies... varispeed galore...

One of Timberland's recent efforts. The single with Justin Timberlake and Madonna. Okay so its probably got a lot to do with the fact that I'm mostly paid to work in the same genre  Rolling Eyes ...but damn, they got mad skills

hah, its wierd for me to hear people talking about seether in that way. I go back to watching them on the local gig scene when they were still south african and called Saron gas. I (or pretty much any south african for that matter) can hardly EVER say that about any big band!

You count Smashing Pumpkins as a guilty pleasure? Sheesh, the last thing I bought was Busta Rhymes featuring Linkin Park... That's pretty guilty.

Try running in my crowd! Although your example would get me glances, too.

Slighly off (anti-) topic: the entire Dischord catalogue is now available as hi res DRM-free downloads.

(Holds head in shame):

Breaking Benjamin--Phobia

Pointless, unredeeming angry music that is currently providing the necessary testosterone to work on my thesis without going completely insane.

So, J, don't feel bad about Seether.  CLA mixed BB, so maybe that redeems the music a little.

i use sepultura and helmet for that.

i'm not sure CLA redeems anything.  he certainly makes a lot of horrible music fun to listen to though.  if only for the sonics.

Ohhhh....well then....I REALLY like her first album...

I just assumed it might be considered a guilty pleasure since she's country, and this is an indie rock forum.

But I DO like her stuff.

The mix of that is sensational. Actually this is probably the wrong thread, I don't really feel guilty about any of my guilty pleasures. I am partial to the Transformers film soundtrack though... that's definitely guilty.

Me too. But i'll to jail for loving music this good.  I'd to hear the unmastered mixes before Ted got them.  I hold Neal in high regard I doubt he'd just let the high be that harsh.

I really don't consider her a guilty pleasure any more after her second album dropped.  She should be appreciated by everyone.

It's unbelievable.  She is just a fantastic, remarkable talent.

The sonics are fine.  Just listen to the songs.

For those interested, Questlove produced some of the new tracks I believe.

I made myself believe something that wasn't true or worth worrying about.

I thought Neal Avron produced the whole thing?!?!?

Yeah, right after I wrote that, I went and checked it out, and questlove isn't credited anywhere....maybe i'm mistaken, but I could've sworn i heard about that a while back.  Maybe he got fired...although not likely...haha.

I'm way late on this one, but back in the day when all I listened to or played was heavy rock, I would listen to Anita Baker in private.  I didn't dare let my friends know that I liked that sort of thing.  Seems funny now.

I really like Outkast (particularly Andre 3000' stuff), which coming from a small farming town in Indiana, is kind of odd.

I also really like ABBA, the Darkness (while many think of them as a sort of 'joke' band, they're genuinely one of my favorite groups), and KISS is my favorite group (and they've always historically been sort of looked down upon by most 'respectable' music sources)

I also love Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy" record. Although a lot of people were expecting Sweet Child O' Mine 2.0, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed Axl's new stuff.
