Title: Pro Audio DSP's Dynamic Spectrum Mapper
Post by: PaulyD on November 26, 2008, 05:45:02 AM
If you mix with Pro Tools or an AudioUnits host on a Mac and don't already have the Pro Audio DSP Dynamic Spectrum Mapper, you are missing out!!

It is unlike other multi-band dynamics processors you may have tried already. This thing can tame tracks that are harsh and breathe life into tracks that are dull. It can even do both to a single track!

It's not cheap and you'll need an iLok, but they offer a fully-functional 21-day demo. I just started the demo this evening, but I am so buying this plug-in!

Created by Paul Frindle, so you know it can't be bad. Smile

And oh yes, read the manual!

Have fun,

Paul

Just for info. I have made an introduction video for this plug-in:

Sorry about the uploaded video sound quality - still, I hope it gives a flavour of what it's all about.

That looks fascinating.  Can it fix the bad edit where the song is looped?

I found the video quite informative and enjoyable.  I'll have to investigate the plugin further.

It might be helpful - but it will depend on what the error is? The DSM can try to return the signal to the captured original response and this will help if it's a 'brown out', but it can't actually replace anything that's not there.

Just for info I have done another video explaining the basics of de-essing and vocal control with the DSM.. It suffers a bit from video coding sound quality loss - but hopefully still gets the message across..

Can you get to work on this plug-in?   Smile  It could be called "Magic Bridge"

Just for info. Today we released a new version of the DSM with better metering and limiter - and it now supports both PC and Mac VST..

spent the better part of yesterday afternoon playing with this plug in on a variety of things.  i am simply blown away by it.  never have i heard a single tool that makes me rethink how i've been doing many, many things.  a friend told me this plug just about scares him.  when he was describing what it can do, i was smiling and just couldn't wait to try it.  i now have that same feeling - and it's a very good thing.  i want to experiment A TON with this plug and find where it works best.  i haven't felt this way in a LONG time.

this is a real winner.  it's unlike anything i've ever even heard of.  there's a demo period, so go try it.  i'm telling you, this thing is mind-blowing.

Same here. Without comparison the most capable tool I have ever used. From subtle enhancements of great sounding audio to dramatic improvements of poor sounding tracks and mixes. Very controlable  Thumbs Up

Yes! I've also been using it as a regular compressor, with no curve applied. It is a great compressor even without the curves.

Tx for the heads-up on the DSM!

I watched Mr. Frindles videos, and must conclude that this is such a sensible approach!

I am but an amateur, I need to watch the budget, but for what I do this is looking like the most cost-effective plugin I might get.

I have good mic's, ok pre's and convertors, not such a bad room when it's finished (ha!), the standard PTLE suite, the BF Pultec bundle, Digi's DINR, all the Massey plugins, and Altiverb. So, pretty much your standard ranch amateur rig I guess. That said, I almost never use much more than the Altiverb Chapman EMT Plate, Massey vt3, Massey CT4 and that's about it!.  Everything I do must be ITB right now.  And this DSM looks like the last important piece of the puzzle. I think the principle behind it is astonishingly well thought out.

Tx again.

Beware of some of the presets - they come with +24dB of gain.  Nice on the eardrums if you call up one while playing and were unaware.    I might be on the outside on this one, but to my ear the dice and slice has the all familiar artifacts of digital noise reduction, mp3 and other frequency domain types of processing.  Perhaps used sparingly it's a good tool, but I'm not sold on this one despite the many positive endorsements.

With a bit of practice you should get the hang of using it, Arf, and be able to get first class results.

In this thread Paul offers advice on have to use it in different applications:

Check out his posts starting with #31.

Good luck!

i have made dsm work for me and, for my mastering clients.
i think i am handling the artifacts, every process makes some...

the results for me seem worth some extra effort. otherwise
i would have to do even more work to get the same results.

i would recommend dsm to experienced engineers; or
for those who are willing to learn how to use a device
that has no direct counterpart in analog processing.
