Lathetrolls is a really great site that I also post and lurk on - and it would be great to see get more members.  I know Steve E. was recently having lots of problems with bugs in the registration process on the phpbb platform he uses - and he just does this as a very part time for fun project - so it's not like he can devote a lot of attention to this.  You should be able to pm him at steve at steveespinola dot com if you need to.

Best regards,
Steve Berson

It seems that he is requiring that anyone who wants to join must go through the signup process and then email him directly.

It's a measure to eliminate spambots. These are computer programs that seek out phpbb sites and join up so that they can post advertising and/or links.

It used to be that you could stop these with a captcha graphic, but spambots are smart enough these days to crack that too. For my phpBB site I resorted to requiring a real person to email me.

I heard a recent new story about groups of people being paid to type in capchas for the spammers.

Incredible site, but the last time I went there, I began to have unholy thoughts, did a topic here and Steve ended up buying a big old Fairchild lathe.

I feel responsible!

As you should.

I've been having unholy thoughts as well, hopefully finally exorcised...

Small world...as it turns out the host for the site is a very good friend of a good friend of mine. We actually talked a while back on the phone about some microphones he had questions about but I did not put 2 and 2 together.

I got signed up. Now I just have to resist the temptations...

Thanks for ALL the HELP!
