Title: 13 Products Made By Child Labor or Forced Labor
Post by: Barry Hufker on December 18, 2010, 10:43:56 AM
Some of these are very basic items so I'm not sure what one does about this.

Unfortunately there is very little to do.

Most of the produced items get bundled in with others made without forced or child labor, and then get exported to other countries.

This is not like a "sweat shop" where you can pinpoint a manufacturer.

I really would like to see though, our department of Labor, focusing on US jobs. THAT we can pinpoint easily enough.

And I do not like it at all that every caption does not include "U.S." before "Department Of Labor"

I wonder what those countries Dpt of Labor have to say about this report? It might be inaccurate. Not completely, but perhaps slightly exaggerated. Not that any of our Government departments ever exaggerate anything... Wink

Cheers

Angola, Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, China, Ecuador, Ghana, Guatemala, Jordan, Kyrgyz Republic, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Thailand, Uganda, Ukraine, Zambia.

All countries listed in the HP article that just happen to be members of the UN Human Rights Council.

Exactly why I shrug and joke about human tragedy. It's just my complete pessimist pokin' out like a turtle head.

Any one of us could make such a better World. Look at them.

The other thing that bothers me about this is the USA isn't listed at all.

That is because it is the US Department of Labor making these "reports"

All to make us look good, feel good, and think that this sort of thing "never" happens in our Great Country.

Crock of horse%$!t.

Curiously absent from the US DOL documents is the oil (petroleum) produced with forced labor in several middle-eastern countries.

That's exactly why I sold my oil stock 25 years ago.  One of the stockholder meeting items was the use of slave labor in Russia.

No kidding.

I don't like child labor.

Children have very little or no sense and feeling for quality.

They fit round the back of mixing desks much better though and those little fingers can access annoying connectors so much better.

BBC made a decent attempt at exposing with context some of the issues in a series called 'The true cost of.....'. There were different episodes for different products.
The one I saw was showing the cheap clothes workers.
Pretty horrific conditions in what were considered official and regulated factories.
