Title: let's put our cards on the table....
Post by: j.hall on October 21, 2004, 11:26:15 AM
i was thinking a few nights back about how we all pass around advice like it's pennies.

we talk about song writing and create taste on this forum ALL THE TIME.  i always wonder what some of you are doing creativily and where your perspectives are coming from.

i've PM'd some of you specifically asking.

so, i sort of realized that i haven't done squat in this regard.

so here it is, here are all my cards.....no disclaimers......no appologies.....this is me....

my band is called secret club, i play guitar in this band though i'm a drummer of 22 years.  i wrote all the songs years ago and some good friends liked em.....now we are a band that has a full length that hasn't been finished since i started tracking it four years ago.

website is a long story. so here we are.

http://www.myspace.com/secretclub/

you can listen to three songs in demo form.

while the Theta Rhythm site is being built i started a pure volume page for the mix room

the work up there was not done in the new room....but it's still my work.

http://www.purevolume.com/thetarhythm/

that's all i got......now you all know where i'm coming from.

you can like it, or you can not.

  Thanks for sharing J.,

Not a whole lot here. You can check out the last record I worked on at:
www.cdbaby.com/cd/elband

This was my first record. Charles Dye mixed it. Great learning experience. The record was released last weekend, Already played on the radio but I missed it.
I am helping this band now with a little preproduction for their demo sessions of newer material.

Currently looking for my next band to work with. I am "helping" some friends of mines bands in the studio in the next few weeks.

Just hanging socially in "the scene" schmoozing it up until my next gig.

I'm playing guitar, singing and writing in His Last Chance <http://hislastchance.com/> which is the project I started after my previous punk and/or punk/ska band was finally over. I also played in a band called Reversible and substitued for a while on guitar for Civella <http://civellamusic.com/>. I'm also subbing on bass for Deadline <http://deadlinband.com>.

Since 2003 I've been spending a lot more time on recording. I'd always been interested and had a 4-track in high school but after paying lots of money to record albums that just came out crappy I had the hubris to start putting my own project studio together. So far it's a success becuase I've made better sounding stuff at home than I ever paid anyone to do. Which is also sad since a. I'm so new and b. I think I've got a long way to go before I'm Good.

Samples of what I've recorde are at http://justinpenney.com/clients.shtml

Ok cool.

Well I've been drumming/guitaring messing around with studio equipment for 20 years or so. Most recently I was is in Jim Palmers band for a few years (son of famous singer Robert Palmer, the Addicted to Love track remember that?) we demo'd 70 odd songs in various studios. Can't play it to you though due to contractual reasons unfortunately. But..I can can give you a link to a cover we used to do to warm up www.orangeyellowred.com/monkey_food.mp3 its a cover of the Foo Fighters track Monkey Wrench that we recorded 100% live on two old VS880's chained together in my studio. It has me playing drums and Jim on vocals. Came out really good I think.

And now I'm recording my own stuff with me playing everything and getting a female singer to do the main vocals, I do backing and stuff. You can hear a track I did 6 months ago on two VS880's again Smile here: www.orangeyellowred.com/allthehopes.mp3 if you're interested. I live in the UK next door to Robert Smith of The Cure if that counts hehe..my favourite mix is To here knows When by My Bloody Valentine who where a band I used to gig with.

Recently I spent a whole serious bunch of cash on much, much better equipment that I'm now learning to use, and that's why I joined this forum to help me learn. I am in the middle of recording with the gear for the first time right now.

Best, Phil.

I don't have any cards... Where do you get cards?

I started playing drums when I was in grade school. I quit after the summer my mother made me do summer band. I was in your typical little kids bands during those years. I didn't start playing music again until I had the hots for a chick who like guitar players. I was taken by surprise and became addicted to shred and heavy metal. I took private lessons for almost 4 years before applying for a coorispondance coarse run by a Musicians Institute of Technology Guitar instructor. Woodshed'd until auditioning for a Christian heavy metal group called Golgotha.
We wrote, we rehearses and went through several lineups while trying to survive grunge. Somewhere in this I met Victor Marrese a local studio owner who was originally from Chicago. I watched, learned and then was removed from my position for arguing with Vic while clients were present. I tried looking for other similar jobs but eveyone was full up. I bought a 4 track. Wrote wrote wrote. I bought and 8 track and did a concept album by myself in a 8X8X8 cube. The results of that experiment. http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=1216&a lid=-1

Since my first recording experiences were in a large facility I knew If I was to be happy I was going to have to start heading back in that direction for sanity sake. The garage ( http://www.atomictoyboxstudios.com ) is a compromise with my goals and my wifes. Over the years I've probably assisted in hundred of songs off and on with various bands who never went anywhere. This led me to believe for a long time that it(lack of success) was my doing somehow. So I eventually kept my cards hidden and only used them to help people via word of mouth.  In January I pulled my cards out to help a local band because other studio they went to wasn't working out. Here is the results of basically 2 days:
http://www.submissiontheband.com/ click on the music icon.

While Im doing additional noise abatement construction work in the studio Im working with a Entertainment company that does commercials and short films called Vaceart Entertainment that is just getting off the ground.

I know.... Way too much information.

The thorn in my side right now is rewriting a song that was crtiqued in the MARSH.

See...

I said I didn't have any cards.

Peace,
Dennis

Good shit J. --

I'm pretty new here.. but I'll share if anyone's intersted.

I've been writing songs and playing in bands for the last 10 or so years. The latest project is called A.J. & Altercana.

After the last solo record I put out, I had some minimal success. Charted on R&R on the specialty charts... where they gave me record of the week as well. (excuse the sound of me patting my own back)

We're in the process of wrapping up a new six song EP.

You can check it all out HERE if interested.

As for me, I'm a simple college student. I'm just starting up my band, Land&Station, and while the four main members are established I'm still adding more.. you can never have enough violin, accordion, and xylophone players (I WILL have my 100 piece crackpot orchestra!)

As far as recording is concerned my setup is most basic, a computer, an echo mia, a few 57s, an at3035, and a atm25, a small mixer, a dmp3, monitors, and some plugins. haha while being the most weak setup it gets my stuff recorded better than a lot of demos i hear. As far as stuff I've already done my solo project peoplelikeus can be found at http://www.utdallas.edu/~bdv021000 but most of that stuff was quick flurries of ideas and means of sonic experimentation and emotional release as opposed to actual recordings.

I still haven't decided if I want to truly focus on recording, or if I should stick to making music... either way it's always good to learn as much as I can about this kinda stuff just for the fun of it.

Cool tunes, j.  I'm not so up on the latest in indie rock, but I'll tell you this (and it's a compliment coming from me even if you don't think so) -- your tunes reminded me a bit of Superchunk.  No doubt there's major stylistic differences, but something about the rhythm and timbre of the vocals just makes me think back to "skip steps 1 and 3".

Even though I've only posted on these forums a few times I figured I would post something about myself anyway, I guess as an intro.

Been playing bass gtr about 8 years and am currently starting a band that at the moment has no name, as soon as songs are even in the demo stage I will post them.

Got into recording about 5 years ago and dont hold this against me I went to a recording school.  I will not post which one but if anyone wants to PM me I will divulge and tell u just why said school is an utter load of crap.  I have been working in professional studios going on 3 years and have a mobile rig consisting of a PC running Nuendo with an Aardvark Q10 some 57s, an NT1 and a few other lower food chain mics.  Even with this meager setup I have recorded a few records that have been released on small indies.

Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

I'm Fibes, I run a shop called Elevated Basement studio and Play in a band called Superhorse and another band (we're reuniting for a halloween show) called GAM.

Playing studio guitar is how i got into this 10+ years ago and now it's eating up all of my playing time. Waaahhh!

I will continue to fight the PT monopoly, remain addicted to Class-A gear and have too many mics around for my own good.

I've been playing drums and percussion for almost as long as I can remember.  My Dad's Uncle Mario was a drummer and gave me my first sticks and practice pad when I was 3.  I've been playing ever since.  I'm in a quirky rock band called Wiplot.  We are the laziest band in show business so there's not a website or music posted anywhere on the web.

I opened my studio, Oxide Lounge Recording, in the fall of 2002.  Before that I worked at a studio that a friend owned.  he decided to get out and I bought a lot of the gear and found a much better room to put it in.

I'm currently producing the second record by a band called Backyard Tire Fire.  They did their debut with me last summer, and had a film crew there to make a documentary.  There are music and movie clips on their site   Backyard Tire Fire.

I spent over a year (on and off) working with a band called None Taken.  They have clips at None Taken.  They recently had the opportunity to open for Sevendust based on the record we did called "A Certain Sense of Touch."

There were also two songs by Secret Club mixed at my joint last year when J Hall came for weekend.

I also have an accompanist gig for the dance department at Illinois State University.

Post by: NelsonL on October 22, 2004, 12:59:46 PM
My first experience in a recording studio was a modest failure. I can remember the engineer saying "this is a pretty normal mix for this type of music." Right, normal, that's exactly what we're aiming for. I'm still surprised he bothered to pretend he knew what "type" of music we were making. Unless "shitty" can be considered a genre.

But we weren't completely without merit. We played our instruments passably well for 16 and 17 year olds with one exception. Our drummer Jason played the drums like a drunken octopus, and happened to be 25 at that time.

We borrowed all the nicest gear we could get our hands on-- which ultimately wasn't that nice: A Randall 4x12, my Dad's silver face dual showman, a yamaha bass etc. Unfortunately we didn't know that having 3 year old drum heads would affect our sound so adversely.

But hey, this was 2" tape mixed down on a large format console, this was going to sound great.

Except it didn't.

Then the engineer accused us of stealing his smokes. And all trust was lost. This was when I started to become suspicious of the word "pro."

"Pro" seemed to imply working knowledge of the production techniques employed by Journey and not much else.

Eventually we started recording with a friend who owned an ADAT joint when that shit was brand new. After a few sessions there we realized that something was wrong with the sound of his Mackie/Alesis combo. So we rented a room, bought a 1/2" 8 track and a Tascam board and set out on our own.

Now I'm not saying the Tascam sounded better than the mackie-- it just sounded different. I think we were inordinately attached to that board-- probably because it was brown with orange knobs--a combination of notable aesthetic genius.

We recorded ourselves a lot, and we recorded other bands. We hit the tape really hot. Nothing sounded that great but it sounded different enough from the ADAT guy that we started to win his more critical clients.

Then I got older and moved around a lot.

I got into DAW recording in 1999 because it was compact and affordable and because (like many people at that time) I was under the influence of OK Computer and had vague ideas about pastiche and/or musique concrete.

So these days I'm back home in CA, recording various projects.

In February I started playing with some old Friend's here's the website: http://thedyingcalifornian.com/

We're currently tracking our next record.

I am a freelance engineer in Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada!). I record all kinds of music, but I've been doing mostly heavy or experimental stuff recently. I've been in several bands, and am in two functioning projects right now.

Here is a link to some audio clips. The rest of the website is under construction, sorry!

http://www.mid-fi.com/audio.htm

I'll just give a brief speil about the stuff that's on the above page...I recorded and mixed all of it...

Dreaming City was a band that existed in several forms from 1998 to 2004...the drum/guitar stuff is the most recent. It was recorded live, no overdubs. I played drums, and a chap by the name of J Freeman played guitar.

The recording project stuff was from a two year period prior to the guitar/drum stuff. I played drums, bass, and guitar on those songs and J played bass and guitar. We both sang.

The Blasphenaut was a ridiculous disco-gabber-grind outfit in which I played bass. Those songs are from a 10" record that was the last release of Minneapolis label History of the futurE.

Head Hits Concrete is a grind unit that sounds like machinery. I played bass in this one too. Sadly, we just went on indefinite hiatus. These songs are from a very limited 7" that was pressed for our summer tour this past August.

I am in two very new projects, another guitar/drum duo with Darcy from HHC called Prague, and a college-math band called Prada. I haven't played out with either of them, that's how fricken new they are.

Aside from playing, I'm trying to set up a studio...difficult task, indeed.

That's about where I'm at now.

This is a cool thread.

-Craig

My bands called Elohsa. You'll never guess where the name came from.

Anyway heres the album. www.elohsa.com/217_Snapshots/

It was tracked on an Ardvark Q10, mixed on CEP2 and only waves plugins.

My personal favorites are track 8.9. and 14. Fan favorites are 7, 8 and 15, although they vary quite a bit.

Jay, that was some good stuff. Rythmic and interesting, good harmonies. Get an album out there and I'll buy it!!

thanks, the record should be done in early 05, tracking is almost done......in my epic dreams for this record i enlisted fellow PSW poster "lord" to write segues for the whole record.

there won't be any silence in the record.....every song will be segued together............

we still need a record label to put it out.....

Thanks J. I do too!! The biggest problem is finding a space/building that is suitable layout-wise AND that you can make noise in without bothering anyone else. I've been looking at places off and on for months, no luck yet! Oh well. It will happen eventually.

"takeout" and i spent some time looking around this city for a place we could build a really nice studio.  our idea was to buildout a tracking room (maybe a few iso booths) and control room for him to track in.....then add another control room attached to the tracking room that would be my mix room.

we ended up finding some really cool spaces in some places around town we never knew existed......

in the end, we decided not to take on such a huge undertaking in this city......not to say we won't do it some day, but just not now.

anyway.....we had trouble finding places until we started driving around trying to get lost.

The name's Nick Holmes
Tracked the Constantines "Shine A Light"
Tacked & mixed the Sadies "Stories often Told"
...& a bunch of others. This year's been mostly road work with A Silver Mt Zion, Do Make Say Think, & bits & pieces of other tours (the occasional BSS or Black Ox Orkestar for instance).
Hoping to do a couple of records soon.
Oh yeah... no love from AMG (of course)

I play guitar in a band called With Every Idle Hour.  I interned at a project studio here on Long Island in the late 90's not knowing my ass from my elbow.  Well, I think I've figured out the difference between those two, but I've got quite a bit to learn about audio still.

I do all of our recordings (like that's not painfully obvious?!) and we work in our drummer's dad's warehouse.  He's a pretty chill dude and let me take over an old unused office for a control room and we use the warehouse space for the live room.  Not the greatest sounding space in the world, but I'm not looking any gift horse in the mouth.

You can hear our doo doo by clicking on the link in my signature.  Thanks!

Eddie here.

Band is "Cuatro Caminos", playing dub-ified Mexican influenced rock music.
I play guitars and percussion and sing. We used to be just a recording project band, but now we've gone "live" with a stripped-down sound. Our debut record has a bunch of horns, keys, vocal harmonies and multiple guitar tracks that we can't do live but we forge ahead anyway.
Here's our 'site: www.stumprecords.com

First project done on Digital Performer and Adats, Mackie 24/8 (mine)and Soundcraft Spirit (partner's).
414's, 57's and assorted other mics.
Mixed and mastered by Matt Murman in Phoenix. He's a partner.

I'm trying my hand at recording friend's bands but I really must upgrade my format soon. This site is excellent for tips and tricks, for sure.

Best,
Eddie Gonzales

Cool commercials! Are the 1600 Pennsylvania Ave and Hatcher Homes spots shot on film or video? They look like film to me, but it's a hard call with Windows Media Player being as crappy as it is.

I would love to work with film, but due to our client-base our production budgets won't permit it. We do a fair enough job with miniDV, I think. Your commercials are tight and very professional looking! How many people do you have handling production?

Hi guys 'n gals,

longtime lurker in all of these forums.  I usually get enough of a kick out of reading everyone's posts, that i don't need to speak up.  and usually, my clacking around on a keyboard annoys the people i'm working with.  but since this is for meeting all the people i read all of the time, i thought i'd jump in and say hi.

i'm an assistant engineer at one of the big studios in l.a.  but i use it in down time to cut local bands.  also was in nashvile doing the same thing but at a publishing company.  so some of my projects are:

midnight movies- e.p. and some work on emperor norton lp
will kimbrough- first solo lp
giant drag- ep
shoot out the lights ep
mixed a song on vue's rca ep
guy clark- cold dog soup

so anyway, i'm here to say that indie rock is in the spirit, not the gear you have.  i cut just as many tracks in my bedroom as you guys do.

good meeting ya'll

Cool band, i've played on the same bill as GB in a few towns, Baltimore at the now defunct Memory Lane comes to mind. Car burning out front and all...

So are you the crazy bassist/vocalist?

Should have posted this earlier . . . I wasn't paying attention.

I own & operate a small studio and label in Austin, TX.  I have engineered releases by

Spoon
Alejandro Escovedo
Dumptruck
Backlit Revolver
Walter Tragert
Mike Hall & the Woodpeckers
Colin Leyden
Ursa Major
Christie Love Experience (my band)

I've demoed a lot of stuff for

Fastball
Spoon
Pariah
Loose Diamonds

Mostly I just do this for fun.  I pay the bills with my day job, which allows me to be more selective in the studio.  I'm not sure I'd be happy with the compromises I might have to make in order to be an AE full time.  I'm still trying to figure out if that's a copout!

Your song Chelsea Hotel has pulled me out

Any chance of you revealing guitar/amp combination(s)
and recording signal path. The Hurdy Gurdy pad
is way cool too.

hurdy gurdy.....do you mean the pump organ???

that's no pad.........that's a real, 1920's i believe, pump organ.

and it's SUPER heavy, i helped move it.....TWICE.

man did it sound good.

i mic'd it in stereo with two soundeluxe U-95's....the low end in that pump organ was beautiful.  the organ had a few flaws hence the miss firing high flutes in the intro.....couldn't get rid of, we just went with it.

guitars....

we had 8 guitars, and about 12 amps with maybe 4 different cabs to use.

i know the clean channel and one distortion part (done at the same time via a stereo volume pedal) was a les paul custom with P-90's to an ernie ball volume pedal, to a matchless (not the chieftan, i think it was one of the first matchless amps made) to a custom built fender 4x12.

it was one of those huge fender cabs that had 2 x12's.  the guitar player gutted it and built a 4x12 in it.  same cab, same grille clothe, more speakers.

the mic was either an earthworks TC-30k, or an AKG C-12a.  mic pre was API 512 straight to tape, analog 2" 24 track running at 30ips +9.

second distortion track was an old marshall jmp practically dimed with the les paul.  i think we used a fender 2x12 cab for that with green backs in it.  not sure about the mic.....for sure we used an API 512.

Hey Drew, I have "Do you know who you are?"  What did you use for kick drum mic on that?  It's got more thump than most records.

As for who I am?
I am a 25 year old full time doctoral student at Georgia Tech who does live sound system design, system tuning/tech, and acoustics consulting as a side business.  Also do some live sound mixing if people are willing to keep their stage volume in check.

My last project was a demo studio attached to a new band practice facility here in Atlanta.  Double 12" block wall + air gap for isolation, and other goodies...

Oh, and at a definite crossroads music-wise, as I am starting to feel pretty old at shows.

hi class-

nick kraska.  i'm in a band called new black.  http://www.newblack.net  we've been lucky enough to work in some fancy studios and tour a bunch.  bands you've probably never heard of that i played in were fleur-de-lis, ng kindheit, mal vu, south of no north. i also have done a good amount of soundtrack shit for modern dance with a nyc dancer nora stephens.

i got a 4 track in 92 and just fucked around with my own stuff and making my old band's practice tapes sound as good as i could.  in 96 i recorded at a "real studio" which was a 1" 16tk in a basement, but singing into a U87 was a lifechanging event that made me want to really pursue recording.  eventually i got an 8 tk, then 16 - prolly on the verge of going to 2".

i used to record bands out of my practice space but now i'm kinda all over freelancing wherever.   i've been in the painfully long and tedious process of building my attic out for my studio - all while working a day job (we all know there's no money in indie rock right? Smile) and touring w/the band.

i'm in the middle of a few recording projects for local bands right now... just trying to get better at what i do slowly but surely. what's the saying, the older you get the more you realize the less you know?

imagine how the rest of us feel at shows.

i went to see ted leo a few nights back......all the kids with "x" on their hands sat down on the floor (right up at the stage) in between bands.

they SAT DOWN.

not only would the thought of sitting down on a club floor make me want to vomit, but what the hell is that all about.

as my buddy chris said...."hey, that just makes it easier for me to get right up front....."

I know what you mean, Phil.  My friend plays in a band called Straylight Run and I went to see him on his first night of tour and I would almost swear that I was the oldest guy in the place, barring the staff of the place.  Granted I'm 29 and the average listener of my friend's band is probably 15, but it was pretty ridiculous.

I went to see Helmet this past Sunday and I actually felt like I was surrounded mainly by people from my age group.  Most everyone there was in their late 20's/early 30's.  I think there might've been a few in attendance that would qualify as early 20's, but no more than 10 that I saw.

So, I guess it depends on which band you're going to see.

... damn it, it's guaranteed that I fucked up if I don't preview my messages before posting them.

I'm just in favor of shows being attended.

Over 21 does not a good venue make.

NYC case in point for Assman (nice handle) Piano's is a POS venue, and it's 21 and up. I'd rather play some kids living room than a sterile self-important box.

But yeah, I'm no kid anymore and seeing the same thing rehashed over and over with a constantly rotating cast of fresh new faces gets kind of old.

I'm sure somebody somewhere felt that way about me when I was 20.

piano's isn't great i agree, they're just in the right location for the crowd they get. North 6th and southpaw in brooklyn are usually good. there are quite a few clubs that have closed in the city in the past 5 years, a couple really good ones in fact, like the wetlands. most tho closed because they had shit bands. i remember being at the elbow room one nite and all the bands not only sucked but were completely different from one another, so with good reason, the whole crowd was different for every band. i don't understand why people say they're having an "indie rock nite" and its starts with a metal band, followed by a girl with an acoustic gtr who can't sing, then a funk band, then a weird devo-ish new wave band, and then a rock band who of course after dealing with all that is drunk as hell.  Shocked Man, if i only had some money...

Update:

Now beginning the first stages of setting up my own non-profit organization. This will be taking a lot of my time in research, networking, promotion, etc. for the next year. All production responsibilities are put on hold until this baby is up and running. Should be filing for status in a couple months. Once status is achieved I will be able to share with you guys the exciting ideas that I have that will better our music community. Something I hope everyone will be in support of in one way or another.

For now I'm just keeping my fingers crossed.

Wish me luck.

Now, I make amateur records with friends in my house using whatever I can find.

this is the last one I did: www.thebearselftitled.com
My disclaimer is that the e-card/streaming was botched by the web guy as well as the mp3s for download.  I'm remixing the record after grad school finals are over.  But yeah...

Miranda Warning
Jumprope

Not playing much anymore, sometimes filling in on recordings by friends.  Doing some engineering at a friend's studio in Andover, Ma. and recording some material for an old bandmate with my home setup.

Truth be told, Seth Tiven did as much or more of the engineering on that record as I did.  I primarily worked on the basic tracks.  I ended up giving Seth a key to the studio and he did a lot of stuff after hours on his own, along with my friend & studio partner of sorts Alan Durham (who played guitar on the record).

Seth moved to Austin from Boston in the mid-90s, presumably to be with a gal he eventually married (& divorced).  He assembled a new Dumptruck lineup here in Austin.  Several permutations later, I believe it's still going strong.  Last I spoke with him, he was also working as a programmer for some company in the medical field back in Boston.

SXSW.   Amazing.  Hunter Darby (the current bass player) helped to mix a CD of a band I play guitar with, The Black Rabbits.

I talked to Seth after the show for a bit.  Apparently all of the early stuff is being (has been?) reissued.

Hey SPGrover . . . that's cool that they're re-issuing the Dumptruck catalog.  For all the critical acclaim that band received, they sure got the short end of the stick when it came to luck.  Being sued by their (former) label when the label failed to pick up a contract option was unbelievable!

By the way, I'm originally from Missouri . . . where's Parkville?  (I was born in St. Louis and moved to Rolla when I was 1.  My pop taught at Wash U and then UMR.)

Yep, although Alan Durham is his equal, in my opinion.  Apples & oranges in style, though.  I don't know who is playing guitar for Dumptruck now.  Maybe Jacob Schultze (sp?).

Jacob wasn't playing with them as of last Aug. (when I talked to him last).

I am a ex musician producer studio owner.

Bands come to me because they want a recording that will get folks with money interested in them.

It works.

The recordings I do have a high sucsess rate in generating industry interest.

Many recordings go on to be released.

Sometimes the acts return with a deal and finance.

Once discovered, A&R often put them with bigger producers rather than book back in with me. Bigger producers are snatching at any work they can find these days, it used to be they did the 2nd albums...but in a day & age where there often IS only one album.... They pounce! It often turns to shit from there on....

My goal is not to work with major labels (the are a PITFA) but to enjoy recording good bands and keep my studio ticking over.

I have studio staff, I train up young engineers to be confident producers. This is satisfying and reaps financial rewards when they return as freelance customers of the studio.

I have a publishing company and hope to perhaps strike it rich via that one day.

I would like to find a good sounding, good looking band that actually has some valid social comentary - perhaps a new rolling Stones / Who or Sex Pistols and earn money from recording & discovering them.... that is my dream.

I also manage a younger producer who started as an intern at my studio, he is not so jaded about major labels, thats a good thing (for him) I have fun getting him paid & royalties. He just produced a number 40 in the UK chart.

I was just sent an email pointing me to this thread... here's a link to an album that was done entirely in the M-A warehouse though some stuff was cut in a couple other places [overdubs and stuff] and mixed in the dining room of my house and at a joint called "The Outpost" [because there was an actual 'drop dead date' when we had to have the album finished... we had a mastering date with the late Denny Purcell]... they were subsequently dropped by the label, and the product was put out on M-A's "Red Sky" label as a favor to the guys in the band.

At any rate... here's the link: http://cdbaby.com/cd/blacknumber9

The examples are like a verse/chorus kinda thing... but feel free to buy the product... it's come close to recouping the cost of pressing... a few more units and it might actually start to make the guys in the band some money [yeah, right, sure... uh-huh... and the Easter Bunny will be writing the checks... right?]

ok, why not..  here goes nothing!

my band is called XXOXIA (pronounced ek-zo'-shya). we are based out of the philadelphia area.  i've been playing in bands with the drummer and singer for years now (almost 10 yrs with the drummer), however this band has been together for about 5 months.  we are tracking and mixing the album at a small studio owned by myself and the drummer.  essentially, i would appreciate comments (good or bad) on the songs right now as well as the recording/production quality.  keep in mind that the songs are rough mixes.  i was going to wait until the songs were finished, but i figured this was more of a songwriting, rather than production quality post...

i'm very interested to know what everyone thinks about this music.  frankly, being both the bass player and engineer on this album is making me begin to loose perspective!

ne-way, on to the music!

good luck finishing it off.....and hope you don't re-think the recording so many times that it takes 4.5 years to finish............

Hey, thanks for the kind words.  Wow, 4.5 years!  Holy crap, I feel much better now. lol.  Hopefully, it won't take quite that long to wrap this one up (but you never know with my band)...

At times I think it's both a blessing and a curse to have a band with access to a studio 24/7.  Obviously, it's nice not to pay for studio time (well, I'M still paying for it. hehe), but then it becomes "Well, we can just keep on recording more and more takes and more and more tracks until we turn blue in the face."

Ugh, I think my idea of dropping everything and becoming a Biologist is sounding pretty good right about now...  lol

BTW, I listened to a secret club song on another post and I really dug it. I like how the chorus hits you over the head when ur least expecting it.  Nice work, and excellent drum sounds too.

 What a great idea -

O.K. - I had a band through the mid 90's called Boxing Gandhis. We made two records for Atlantic Records, and toured a bunch until ...sadly i had to fire myself from my own band.

Then I was in a band called 58 on BMG ( one record, industroglam)

Since 98 or so I've been producing for other people - I write as well.

I've produced for :

  Brian Setzer Orchestra
  Stray Cats
  Meredith Brooks
  Sprung Monkey
  Echo Brain
  Dan Hicks/Tom Waits

and a bunch of others - see my triumphs, and  my shame at allmusic.com

I enjoy long moonlight strolls from my house to my studio, and have never been CONVICTED for a felony.

Trivial note from me.
I listen to the music from the Chainsmoke Mountain Bike video done by Fox and Sprung Monkey is one of the bands providing music on the video.

I can't remember but I think the video used their debut album. Good band to mountain bike too Smile

I am bassist in a band that is generally considered a "metal" band (no, not "nu-metal" bullshit), but is too eclectic for our own good, as we tend to also make forays into blues-rock and progressive thrash type dealies).  We are called <a href = http://www.punchclockrock.com>Punchclock</a>

My day (and in the summer: night, and every minute in between) job is Shop Manager for Advanced Production Group - regional live provider in western NY (link is in the sig).  I also "teach" live sound for free, to a bunch of volunteers (it's kind of a club, more than a class) at the local college.  I do this for the love of teaching the craft, and I get to play with toys bought by the state of NY, which can be fun.  I also do free-lance live work, and occasionally a foray into the studio, where I'm least useful, but enjoy it nonetheless.

I'm new here, my name is Pete Weaver.

I've been engineering and mixing audio for years in the analog
and digital environments, while at the same time being a pro
musician. My primary instrument is drums as well as composing,
mostly in the hard rock and funk genres.
The project that's near and dear to my heart which I've been
involved with for several years now is called Half The World.

www.halftheworld.cc

It's hard modern rock with female lead vocals and will appeal to
fans of Staind, Fuel, Evanessence etc. Our most recent album got
solid radio airplay on 112 stations across US and Canada.
I engineered and mixed the album.
The album was self released and we are not signed yet, but the
album has been picked up for release as a finished product by two
labels, one in London and one in Brazil. Meanwhile we continue
performing, writing and recording!

As an audio and mix engineer,
I have a standing offer to anyone who's interested, labels,
artists, studios with overflow work, etc . . .
I will mix any one song by any artist for free, provided they
have a Pro Tools session of the song. Keep the mix, use it on
your album or not, no obligation. My purpose in this is to
establish a name for myself as a mix engineer beyond a regional level.

Here are some quick examples of my work:
