Title: Naiant Drum Mics
Post by: NisimPerc on January 13, 2010, 09:08:42 AM
Any opinions? As I've read condensers aren't good for drum recording. Are these only to be used as overheads and room mics?

I guess I've been reading wrong.

I own a pair of the diffuse field mini-mics for guerilla audience mics in smoky nightclubs. One showed up DOA and i've been too lazy to send it back since i've been using DPA 4060s instead.

I do not know these particular mics, but the idea that condensers per se are not to be used for individual drums is ridiculous.

Many of the greatest sounds of all time on drums were obtained with condensers.

I have used very successfully on toms U87, KM-84/86, 451, C12, CS-1, many others.

On bass drum, fet 47 is a world standard.

Send it back when you get a chance, it's not a hard repair  Embarassed

Anyone ever see Ronny Tutt play with Elvis?  All U87s on everything.  How wild would that be now?  Ronny was like Animal up there and I don't think he hit them much.

I guess the only place many a condenser mic would not be happy to be in is the inside of a bass drum. I've always seen 47FET in front of the kick drum or on the beater side.
At Barclay studios, we very often used u67's on drums (sometimes directly in the Studer's line input - totally bypassing the mixer), but when drummers started using drums without bottom skins and wanted the mics inside, we used RE16's. Anyway, most of the condenser mics would not have fitted inside because they are side-address.

I have 3 X-T/D from Niant. They are ok on drums, and work OK on other souces as well. They have a very low output. I usually have the 3124+ at 3 o'clock with these guys even though they are condensors. They can be a little thin on some drum sets, so if you're looking for a do-it-all drum mic this wouldn't be it.

I have one Neumann feet 47 that is designated for inside the bass drum, the only place I ever use that one.

The key is to be sure that it is out of the wind blast.  The main thing that can hurt a capsule in such a case is excessive air movement, not necessarily loud sound volume.

Well, we never dared to do that.
Can you be more specific about the way this one mic became assigned to this particular usage? Did you try several and chose the best? Or has it been deemed not good enough for other usage? Would it still be good for let's say vocals, now that it has been used on kick? The level must be pretty hot, what preamp do you match it with?

You're over thinking all of this.

I find 47fets to work on myriad sources.

Some faves: Bass drum, upright bass, sibilant vocals, guitar cabs, trombone and most other instruments.

the one time i used one on upright and bass drum, I've been blown. It is a shame that Neumann doesn't offer a P48 w/ K47 and big transformer anymore.

I just keep one as the designated BD mic just in case there might be any damage at some point (I have 3 or 4 of them).

Having said that, when we were short for vocal mics at one point (client wanted fet/xfrmr), I did use this "special" one for vocs, and it sounded totally fine.

Thanks for the clarification.
