The studio was temporarily closed due to fire code issues (the sprinklers were half an inch too short or some BS like that). So we put the band for "Live in Studio A" in the DJ booth and miced the entire band with two RE-20's, vocals close up and instruments farther away.

The sound is almost perfect. What the hell?!?

Welcome to the way we used to do it in the early '60s!

What do we need all this STUFF for?
Job justification.

just think...you probably could have done it better with just one mic.

The gobs of stuff is for all the insecurities musicians generally have.
It's a security blankie.

Some of said equipment could be useful when forced to compromise by recording in a small boxy sounding room.
A room where the vocals might indeed sound cool but the piano and rhythm could have a good sized room bump that winds up masking the vocal a good deal...
Theoretically...

I go back and forth with this. the good stuff teaches us how to make the lesser stuff sound good. and the good stuff makes it faster and more consistent, but yeah, we don't NEED anything really. thats when you know YOU are good.

Well, it doesn't sound "almost perfect" to me.
While I like the song and vocal performance, the piano, drum machine bass and "acoustic" guitar are all being recorded direct here.
Mix is awful. Drum machine is like hip hop loud with awful tone. Piezo guitar tone is awful. Bass is buried. RE20 vocal sounds muffled like you would expect.
No offense to any of you but am I missing the joke here?
What you need all that stuff for (and all of those carefully designed and treated rooms for) is to make good sounding recordings. Which this is not.
All this thread is that if you record a bunch of stuff direct alongside an RE20 vocal, in a closet it sounds like crap. Maybe you should rename the thread "PROOF THAT WE NEED ALL OF THIS CRAP."
This band is better than the "recording" that they received here.
Flame away friends!
