Title: Hanging an EMT plate
Post by: John Monforte on December 16, 2010, 01:16:04 PM
I am designing a new studio for a client. Floor space is tight but height is not (good for the acoustics, at least). The client has a 140 without a remote.

The thought is to hang it from the rafters in the hallway outside the control room. To adjust the time, it would hang upside down. I can't imagine why it would not work properly, but I have never seen such an installation, nor heard of one like this.

Does anyone know whether or not this works?

The plate is symetrical, and will care not which way it is hung... providing that the driver is centered AFTER it has been hung.

and of course it should be well-hung.

I mean hung well.

If that thing breaks free - death or severe injury awaits whoever is below.

Fwiw I recall seeing an EMT 140 suspended a little bit above the floor in a tracking room at a studio in Holland, the reason being lack of space for the plate & reducing vibrations..

Use these spring and rubber hangers to hang the plate.  I figure 200 lb x4 should compress correctly.  You will have to do some rigging because the hanging plates will now be on the bottom, but it can work.  I had a situation like that where I mounted a long metal bar on the side of the case that was cabled to the adjust, and you rotated the bar until the engineer said STOP!  The standard rigging was much easier.  Another idea is a cable pulley-ed down the side where you pull the left or right side to adjust- just thinkin' out loud. . .
If you do hang upside down, you should check the tension of the springs because it will change, and definitely what Keith sed about the driver.  Martinsound.com sells the clips and the centering jig.

Do they have to be suspended or can they sit on the ground?

Thanks.

I have had quite a few that sat on the ground, and sounded great.

The main thing to remember with an EMT plate is that they are basically big microphones, and you have to minimise the "bleed."

We have two which sit on the ground - no special isolation, but as Terry says, they pick up everything acoustically.  Quiet talking, building noise, mechanical noise, etc.

If it's MT, how do you fill it?

I was brought up being told that you can't leave the table unless your plate is MT.

Then you have room for pudding.

It's not a pun.  You just have room for pudding.

As Roger Waters so single-mindedly explained...

Hey John, if you do hang one "upside down," please let us know how it worked!
