I was auditioning summing mixers on vintageking site. After listening 1-2 samples I noticed that the improvement was more on the accuracy rather than color (some mixing engineers were discussing about summing mixers benefits on a different forum and this made me wonder).
I thought why not just send the song to a mastering engineer instead of buying them couse they aren't cheap and seems there's a better work-around to finish the all ITB mix...anyway...
The results were more like optimizing with min-phase eq on mastering stage. I'm still self-tutoring myself and currently have to depend a lot on plug-ins couse I don't have mastering grade room or monitors (I have to "analyze" the song).
This made me think if hardware designed for mastering also does this (maybe a compressor?) as simple as how the summing mixers do-though I'm aware they work very different.

Additionally, you have to consider the use of outboard gear. If you're shooting buses to use rack gear, then it makes sense to go OTB. But if you're just adding a summing mixer because some one on a forum or a salesman said so.... I don't get it. I don't see how the DA (and possibly another AD) is better for the sound if you're not getting something like outboard gear in the equation.
You're right to try to evaluate audio samples. Listeners don't care what gear we used. They just care if they like it.
