I vote version 2 (eyeforaneye3.mp3)...and the reason is very very simple: lyric is much more intelligible (imo).

I like "version two" better as well...

The reverb on "one" was overkill, and the stereo seperation seems better on "two"...

However, the lead vocal still needs something.  I don't LOVE the way it's sung, but it could be vastly improved if it were moved from the center.  Right now, it just dominates everything down the middle.  I'd like to see a wider vocal image here--you know, the 90's delay thing here or at least something wider than what's going on already...

...Get the lead out of the way and let the harmonies bloom like they should.

I like the "Table for Glasses" style drum on those downbeats.  Maybe a little more piano?

From a very quick listen on computer speakers .....

I like the drier version better. version 2 (I4NI3)

It was just a quick preference thing.

I guess it just opens the song up, in a good way, to me.

That said, I like the way you panned the Hi Hat to one side and delayed and panned the return to the other side, making it balanced center but still stereo, on version 1 (I4NI2)

Instrumentally, I liked version one, particularly the drum ambience. However, I'm with everyone else in that I didn't think the vocals worked very well in that mix.

If you dried up the vocal a good bit or treated it slightly differently, I think version one would be great.

i liked version two better.
too much reverb in version one on the vocals.
but its multitracked, right?
my humble opinion is that acoustic music should be performed
by the group in one room at one time.
for me acoustic music is group music.
flowing of energie during making music.
interaction.
otherwise the musicians play to a tape.
they get no feedback during performing.
and so for example the drummer has to interact with himself by slowing down and
getting faster.
just my thoughts.

interesting you all assume that i mixed this song (both versions even)

it's not really acoustic music considering it has electric bass, and quite a few electric guitar tracks going on in there.

i also think that making mix suggestions is a bit presumptuous.  why don't you assume these are final mixes left to the producer/band/record label to pick from?  it's either A or B, not "B only if you change......"

don't take me as pissed.....i just read all the replies and made an observation.

Okay then ..... let me re-phrase!

I like the way whoever mixed the song panned the hi hat on version 1.

Is that better?       Very Happy

It does sound like music you might be involved with to me from what little I have heard of your work on this forum.

Please excuse any ass-uming on my part.  Carry on!

I prefer version 2, mainly for the fade in.

There's a track on Teatro (Willie Nelson w/ Daniel Lanois producing) that starts out with with just drums, and I think it works really well.

On this song, I don't think it works without the fade.

I prefer version one; mix two doesn't really gel for me, and the instruments sound a little tubbier.  -E

Version 1:  I don't like the panned 'verb on the hihat, I think the acoustic guitar is too low, nice keys, nice vocals (if a bit wet for my tastes)

Version 2:  I like the drum fade, I still think the acoustic guitar is too low, the vocals seem drier and perhaps more compressed

Hmmm.  I think I like version 1 better.  It seems less constrained.  It's more musical, more relaxed.

I won't dare make mix suggestions at the risk of drawing your ire!

#2 mainly because the Vocals sit in the mix better to my ear but #1 had a nice texture/ambience overall.

I liked the intro to #1 better.

I listened to both 3 times. Sony headphones of consumer quality.

I liked Number 1 (one) better.

It suited "my" tastes for things I think are important to me as a listener.

On Number 2
I "felt" the fade in was too subtle and I actually had to take a second to see if I was actually hearing a fade in.

In contrast Number 1 gave be a nice beat to get "me" moving musically.

One Number 2 when the vocals came in they didn't sit with the texture of the rest of the tracks. I "felt" like they were in a different space.

In constrast on number 1 the vocals smoothly integrated with the instruments and "felt" more comfortable to listen to. Not as clear, but fitting to the over all texture of the song.

I like the instrument build up on both about the same.

One Number 1 I "felt"
The harmony vox seemed more in touch to me. Like 2 singers at the same time verses 2 overdubbed singers...The difference if there was any in reality were very subtle.

Overall number one gave me a moody (warm fuzzy) feeling that the second one didn't.

Peace,
Dennis

Well, If I'm the artist having to pick between the 2< I would pick #2. I didn't assume you mixed it,just so you know. It didn't really cross my mind.

How ever, this did cross my mind, listening from a producer/artist standpoint.

The vibe is great. I really like where it's trying to go but, It sounds disjointed to me. Creative panning walks a fine line and I'm not sure I would have leaned the kit to the left like that. On something this intimate,The vocal, {for me} should feel very close. All the sounds are great.Who ever tracked, did a great job I think. And, the mix is well on it's way. It just sounds like the mix engineer didn't finish the ideas.

Don't be bummed that folks are offering mix ideas. If we post stuff, people are going to comment. How can they not.

It sounds good. I like the song a lot and, that's the important thing.

I liked #1, it sounded more like a 'mix' to me.  #2 sounded like a rough mix in comparison.

Both sound good and I like the vibe of the music

I'm going with #2. The vocals are a lot more clear and direct.

I would prefer #1 with #2's vocal sound.

#1:  Better vibe, more ambient pretty dark overall tone on my in ears.  Mix feels like it's missing something at about 3 o'clock.  Vocals are a bit too obscured by the darkness of the effects, or perhaps the doubling delay time is a bit long.  A little too much electric tones volume wise.

#2:  Same comment on the electric tones, like the fade a lot.  The vocals, while much clearer, don't quite match the ambience of the overall track.

I'd probably pick mix one, but dry up/move up the vocals slightly.

Maybe the second.  To much revrb on the first one.

The first rythm guitar is an electric guitar umplugged and recorded with a mic?
I really don't like this for this song. If it is an acoustic guitar it sound to poor to me in both mixes.

I think that a more Beatles kind of mix will be better. Less reverb, guitars more present, voices more dry and some extreme panning will help the song.

I Like the sound of the plugged electric guitar that appear later.

Luis Bacque.

I like #1 better, but I wish the vocals were as intelligible as in #2.  The vocal dynamics in #1 are really nice, but parts get lost.  #1 comes off as more melancholy for whatever reason and I think that's an important quality for this song.  And the drum fade-in on #2 seems... non-genuine (?)...  like a production trick rather than a compositional device.

What a gorgeous tune, by the way.

Even though version 1's reverb to me sounds a bit heavy on the bottom, i'd go with this version.

Isn't a fade technically always a production desicion (trick, if you will)? The long just-drums intro would definitely lend itself to a fade-in...

You gonna tell us why you wanted our opinion?

i just thought it would be interesting to see what you guys thought.  i didn't really have any hidden motivation.

i just thought it would be fun to see who picked which version and why.

i prefer version 1 BTW.

it makes me think of a band sound checking in a small theater before a show.  sorta imtimate in feel, but open in sound.
