Title: speaker help

I have a rather odd set off monitors: Infinity SM 82. They are circa 1990 or so, bookshelf speakers, but ones I have owned since new, am intimately familiar with, and am rather loath to replace.

Problem: the foam around the edges of the speakers has deteriorated and needs to be replaced.

Options: speaker reconing; trying to find replacements (from Infinity, eBay, etc.); new speakers.

Can anyone here help guide my decision process?

Eight line below there is another post going on on re-coning.

To make the decision you have to prioritise these three factors which are challenge, patience and bother.Whichever is number one than that is your plan of action.



If you want the challenge and can fine the kit then re-cone it.

If you have the patience you may be lucky on e-bay for the replacement. My brother and I are e-bay regulars and there are always things coming up.

If you can not be bothered then buy new ones.

There are a couple of firms in the UK that will "re-foam" your drivers for you.

Let me clarify: I will not try to re-cone these myself. I have no problem going to a specialist, should I decide to go this route.

IMO drivers do not age gracefully. After a few hours of breakin, it's all downhill.

Get new drivers from Harman International, or maybe a well-kept set of used SM-82 speakers from eBay.
