I keep hearing about "the end of CD", including my wife that heard it on NPR this morning.

I know CD's are in their natural decline, but who is stoking up the spin machine and causing all this brouhaha?

I heard the same NPR story. Maybe the online sellers like I-Tunes are stoking the demise of the CD story??? It will be too bad when the only way to listen to music will be off an MP3.

I think it's a bunch of smarty pants music journalists that want to appear superior.
In this information age you can spin info any direction you want, and many believe it.
Truth may actually be relative, at least to a degree, at this point.
Depends upon the observer, see quantum physics.

Obviously CD sales have decreased, and downloads have increased.
A trend that will no doubt continue.
Fortunately iTunes audio quality has recently improved.
But I don't see CD completely going away,
It's the baseline for digital audio, and in a sense the "perfect" hard copy.
I've watched my younger relatives behavior over the last few years,
If it's an artist they really love, they'll buy the CD,
Rip it to iPod and file the disc away for safe keeping.
But there's also a sense that "it'll always be available" on the net.

I keep quoting Mark Twain (as audio CD):

"news of my demise has been greatly exaggerated"
