Title: TAB V78 Settings Chart

Hey All,

I was talking with Terry about the V78 when adopting CS-1 #63.  he mentioned that Oliver had sent him a chart showing how to best set the V78 for different kinds of microphones and that maybe that chart could be posted on the forum.

i know you guys are crazy busy with the CS-1, but is it possible to post the chart?

Ha, found it on my laptop at home right away.

Here is what Oliver emailed me back about three years ago when I got mine:



Hello Terry,

Here is a chart of the input sensitivity vs. clipping with reference to
20/1k/20k Hz at 0dB gain

+6dB max input 23dBu (10V) same as 0dB

0dB max input 17dBu (5V) mix buss, two bus, etc.

-10dB max input 12dBu (3V) modern condensers high output like TLM, etc.

-20dB max input 6.6dBu (1.643V) condensers like U47, M49, KM5x, KM8x, etc. and similar

-40dB max input 0dBu (0.775V) modern ribbons and standard (like SM57/58) dynamics; condensers like C12(a), C60, etc.

-40 dB max input -8.5dBu (0.2945V) vintage ribbons and low output dynamics

Those setting above are just suggestions with reference to 0dB-0.775V, the V78M was designed with soundforming (over and underloading of the input) in mind, so whatever sounds best is what you should use.


output clipping is unloaded/10k load min. +12dBu and loaded with 600 Ohm +11dBu.
So in any case as long you do not try to use it on a +12dB (old IRT specs) system you should be fine, and any setting +4/8dB, etc.
