Title: 3M 996 serial/batch number translation
Post by: xonlocust on February 09, 2007, 10:53:02 PM
hello-

i'm trying to figure out how to decode some serial/batch numbers of old 996 tape i have, and of 2 different lots, they seem to follow different schemes.

first, the newer appearing labels have a bar code and appear almost laser printed. here's an example:

20671-040-2-002

FWIW, this is from a batch purchased from tapetape in 2005 and i replayed the reels last week to find pretty significant shedding, so i transferred contents to the computer for backup.

next, another batch of tapes i got from another source follows what appears to be a different scheme - no bar code, the numbers almost look like someone hand stamped the white label a la a childhood librarian:

91246 08 13

this i speculate as "made in 1991, on the 246th day of the year in plant 8 batch 13".

but i can't figure out any logic on the newer/top one.

any ideas?

thx,
nk
