Title: The renovation from hell. Pics updated 10.25.07
Post by: Fibes on April 03, 2006, 02:03:10 PM
We decided to go ahead and start renovating our rooms with the daunting task of actually staying open while the project goes on. I will try to post pics as we go on. The scope of phase one is to remove the drop ceilng, remove all stuff above it, rewire, finish/treat roof deck, install new flooring, add two amp iso booths and two sound locks in the area that is the tracking room. All this work is being done while the control room is being utilised to mix two albums and four remote recordings. The idea is that the mix projects will be finished at the same time as the tracking room gets finished.

Phase two is installing a new ceiling, new bass trapping, new console, rewiring and bamboo flooring in the control room.

Wish /0 and meeseff luck.

Good luck!  Bamboo flooring is beautiful... I recently did my house with it.  Got a great deal from http://www.ifloor.com ...

Miles lost a battle with a middle aged air conditioning duct yesterday. There was lots of blood, laughter and parking lot wound dressing.

Heal quick Miles there's plenty o' work to do.

I've designed a custom console that will accept one of a few options but for now the new console will be none. Phase three will be a new board and currently the options are: The new Toft  as of yet to be built, a modular API, Tonelux or something that might happen to be the right deal at the right time. I'm actually just glad to be rid of the current Mackie which is really just a cumbersome headphone mixer and talkback device.

Are you guys going to leave the cement block wall bare?  It might be nice to have a reflective wall behind drum kits?  I dunno.. I'm asking... I can't help but notice that Albini's fav drum room is almost 100% cement blocks.  And IIRC the famous "loading bay" at Little Mountain Sound was cement block as well....

You can always have a curtain to pull across it for damping when required...

Anyway, Maybe it's just envy on my part.. my shop is in a wooden structure...

I don't recall that Electrical had any exposed cement block. Tons of exposed Adobe walls though.

Big difference between the two I believe.

(edit) and as soon as i open my big hands and start typing, i go to the electrical site... lo and behold, there is some exposed cement block in the studio b liveroom. my bad.

Not wholly.

The plan is to cover the wall behind the drums with maple plywood with holes drilled in it and stuffed with 703. A sort of bass trap that will also be angled to get rid of the flutter off of the control room window directly across from it. We may not do anything if there isn't a problem.

This is all done on an as needed basis.

The side of the room the photo is taken from is the real PITA.

A can of worms writhing in dog poop...

Ahh .. Plywood and drums... is there any better combo? I think not.

This is one of our projects if we ever get around to it... building a removable unpainted plywood floor under the drums for resonance....

I just woke up about 5 hours early.

Here's an out of scale kind of what it looks like. The blue walls are 703/fabric, and the orange walls are 3 ply solid maple.

The red stripes are metal trusses.Truss depth like 22" (?) truss to floor around 8'4".

This pic is kind of like Barbie; you get an overall idea of the shape, but upon most inspections, you'll find many features missing.

Fibes was at it today. I shall return to it tomorrow... to hopefully finish the framing, while everyone else plays with eggs.

Today I just bought 16 2X2 "DryLock" panels.  They have them at Home Depot if you have not seen them.

Basically they are tongue and groove panels made out of plywood.  The bottom of each panel has rubber on it so it isolates from the floor below.

With these I made a removeable drum riser.  Not sure how it will sound yet but I could report back if wanted.

BTW the 16 panels cost about $95 total.

This might meet your needs as well.

Hey Scott,

Unpainted, CAREFULLY sealed (or unsealed) concrete block is a very useful acoustic material, with good adsorption behavior up to about 4k.

If you use it carefully, typically the only other thing the space needs is diffusion.

Painted or heavily sealed, though, the stuff turns into a nightmare.

RPG's diffusorblox product is an interesting to investigate

Well I did a session of drum tracks today on the new "riser".  To me it sounded better then when the drums were on the concrete floor.  But then again I don't have to most trained ears.  It did make the drums sound better in the room for sure.

If anyone else gives this a try I'd love to hear what you think.

Then comes the floor and finishes for the tracking room.

Yep, the double layered double wall keeping us isolated on the other side from the buzzing and twanging. We're gonna wait until the last minute to put in the lock door so it doesn't get worn out during the process.

Against that wall and at the nasty ceiling we are devising a difusser/bass trap/ugliness hiding device.

I suspected that it was going to sound great as soon as I saw Miles' drawing... No "square" corners,,, The whole room is one large diffuser (sort of).... very little chance of standing waves and the ceiling being diffused won't interact with the floor (being parallel)

Since I saw that drawing I have been contemplating renovating my entire second floor (40'x40')into the studio,  and moving the rehearsal studios downstairs.... I'm going to have to kill you now....

PS: Can I borrow  $50k? ... it's the least you can do!

A skate bomber would be thinking of how to act like she was going to rub your back, and then get you in a wrestling hold, and knock you out with whatever was close.

It's not ideal but the flat roof was covered with a pitched roof years ago so in effect there is a giant airspace above my ceiling. The next step is to seal up and blow in more insulation above the ceiling to help attenuate when it rains heavily. That is the only time I have any issues is during a torrential downpour.

In the control room we hung wood runners and attached rockwool above them, stapled screen in and covered it with fabric. In the tracking room they are wood frames stuffed with insulation and wrapped with peg board with fabric on the inside to keep the insulation from raining down.

Is that what you were asking?

There was a bit of simple logic, and some evil genius in the floor plan of the live room. No surface is faced directly to any other surface. 95% diffuse.

It works. With a 57 aimed 120

The wall that you see is a false wall/trapping wall so in essence the Adams are sitting about 2 feet off the "hard wall" and 6-12" off of the trap wall. We tried them  out a little farther but lost something and moved them around for a while until they found their spot. It took about 2 hours to locate where they were happy which is a heck of a lot quicker than the old scenario where it took three days plus.

It's not a house and it's not in a basement.

There are plenty of places with basements here but not like in the north country where they are needed due to the frost line.

Time to mix some jazz.

judging by the pictures and jovial mood (and of course, y'alls kick-ass room design) me thinks i should start renovating my place too.

What difference is there between the low-end and broadband absorbers?

Also, in the 'CRFrontwall' pic I noticed the acoustic material (703s?) look different in the middle than on the "sides" of the front wall. Is there an actual difference?

The deep bass traps are Ethan Winer style diaphragm traps and the broadband absorbers are merely fiberglass stuffed behing peg board.

The center of the CR wall had 703 (1.5") mounted 4" from the solid wall and was covered in peg board, the sides were 3" heavy rockwool cut tight to the studs for bass trapping in the corners and were covered by screen and then fabric..

No new pics yet 'cause we've been working.

Last night we tracked a great drummer and for the first time I got to hear the room as it was intended. The plan was to replace a drummer from Saturdays session who wasn't cutting it and surprise the client with the results when we sent in the new guitars, keys and steel so it was a quick setup and track...

We added two Bova Ball room mics to the equation, and went with the setup from Saturday. OMFG it was night and day, the room was speaking to us and the best thing besides Miles' "Holy shit" was the drummer coming back in after playback and saying "that's the way I hear it when I'm playing, and it's so natural." Anywho, we've got some wiring issues to deal with and once those are straight we're firing on all cylanders again.

More pics soon.

(Some "after" pics would be real cool guys... if you have the time.)

I don't think so. I drink 'em but here in Georgia they aren't the same.

I'd guess it's an Amstel light.

Miles deserves a medal of honor for yesterdays paint session.

I was only their for 1/2 of it and I felt as though I was tear gassed and covered in oil to be set on fire...

There will be pics as soon as the paint is in a non-volatile state and i can stand in their without vomiting.

Oil paint + ceilings/trusses + airless sprayer + room with no windows = hell on earth.

Yes, I realize how late I am with this, but I just got here...

My wife is assembling a little natural foods store here in the boonies and this is where she go the paint she used, which was very pleasant stuff with which to work:

BTW, this is the funniest thread I've read in PSW, by a long shot.

EXCELLENT! That looks fantastic, huh?!

Besides all the other stuff, great job on drawing up the game plan. It works! It's beautiful and it works.
