Title: regaining your enthusiasm about music.
Post by: j.hall on August 19, 2005, 04:06:34 PM
three bands that have all hit me within a few months of each other that easily made me excited about what's happening in indie rock right now.

in this order.

1.  The Valley Arena

http://www.thevalleyarena.com/

2.  The Life and Times

http://www.thelifeandtimes.com/

3.  Damiera

http://www.myspace.com/damiera

i feel like i'm 16 again.  nervously waiting for more music to rush out a buy.  i truly hope this is a sign that indie rock is coming back around.

This is the first one in a while for me--

Disclaimer: my band is on the same label-- but hey, I paid for my copy and I recommend it regardless.

Oh, and the new Magnolia Electric Co. or are we talking about less established acts?

Pelican
http://www.hydrahead.com/pelican
(this band is already blowing up)

The Stnnng (pronounced stunning)

C'mon - http://www.thisiscmon.com/news.php

The Illuminati - http://www.theilluminati.net/

Love this stuff.   It's straight up rock.  I feel this stuff is pretty representative of a nice little "heavy" indie scence that seems to be gaining momentum.

Cheers

The Valley Arena sounds a lot like Bloc Party (based soley on the song in that video on their site)

The Life and Times sound cool to me. I'll have to give them a purchase.

I've just gotten into this band The Go! Team. It's kind of novelty, but it's damn fun.

For something a little different, there are a couple 2 piece bands that I think are pretty wild.

Hella - http://www.hellaband.com
click on the paper airplane and download the biblical violence video, it's insane.

Lightning Bolt - http://laserbeast.com/ and they have some mp3's on their labe's site - http://www.loadrecords.com/bands/bolt.html I recommend Dracula Mountain

I've been listening to Black Sabbath every day for a little over a year now.  Ever since I got the Black Box set.

EVERY ad on TV in the UK that used to use slinky hip hop or trip hop loop based 'funky' music - now has a guitar based raw indie band clattering away..for the style soundtrack...

Indie is VERY mainstream in the UK...the zeitguist de jour.. cookie cutter punk pop / new metal - not happening....at all.

The future look bright!

As a studio owner that record guitar bands, this is good news, some 15 year olds who dig Franz Ferdinand or Secret Machines today, might form a band in a few years and book time....

That is good news Jules.  I see the same thing happening in Canada... Jet, Frans, The Killers... all over the advertizing stuff, and real strong on the MTV type channels as well... Hasen't broken onto the radio yet though.. Hopefully that can't be far behind?

Good point about influencing future bands... I hadn't made that connection yet.  Cool

Cheerio!

Some might say I'm a bit biased because I am their friend and live sound guy but The Most Serene Republic are doing great things at a really young age. www.themostserenerepublic.com

I'm also really into a band called Page France. www.fallrecords.com

...meaning they sound like a revival of Gang of Four meets Jesus Lizard.

By Definition!

Actually, their "Into the Lions Mouth" is more of a Jawbox kind of thing. (My interpretive dance about architecture.) I've been into the suggestions on this thread mucho.

Hella rocks!

I just got home from seeing Damiera in Buffalo tonight.   Incredible!   I must say that it was one of the best live shows I have seen in years.   Those guys are absolutely brilliant and I can't wait to hear a better produced full length from those guys soon.

You will all be hearing a lot about this band in the months ahead.

A friend bought me a copy of 'The Sunlandic Twins' by Of Montreal and I've been diggin the heck out of it.

Super poppy, though (not in the floral sense.)
