Title: question for Avocet users
Post by: dietrich on February 02, 2011, 04:10:27 PM

I have been strongly considering adding an Avocet to my room.
My question is where are people mounting or placing the remote?
I have a Sterling Plan A. Maybe cut a space for it on the desk front?

The Dangerous ST remote seems easier to find good place for

Hey Dietrich,

I love my Avocet, it's been one of my best purchases.  I have my remote on a small table with my keyboard but my plan is to go Sterling Plan A too.  I had thought about coming up with a rackmounting solution for it, perhaps alongside some meters.

I spent some time with the Dangerous unit recently and as good as it is I'd much prefer the Avocet.

Best of luck,
Ruairi

I just set my Avocet controller off to the side of my Sterling.  I think I have a different plan (D) so there is more room than the A.  I like being able to move it should I need to, so I've resisted routing out part of the desk top.

As for the Sterling vs. the Dangerous.  We have the Dangerous in one of our mix rooms.  They love it, however it does not have built-in conversion and it does not mute the speakers at power up, giving a nice BOOOOOM should your DAW reboot.

Another Plan "D" user and I just keep it on the center section -- But for some time, I had it sitting off to the left and the cable ran down the first space on the rack (couldn't put any Crane gear in there anyway - too deep).

I do sort of wish he'd make a flush-mountable box for the beast...  That'd be pretty cool...

I love my Avocet.

Sits just to my left in easy reach.

The mounting thing is only an issue because the connecting cable [like a VGA cable in fact] only comes out of the rear of the unit which is awkward, especially as it has a big ferrite suppressor in line which makes it hard to tidy away.

I tried a 90 degree VGA connector as a kludge, but it kept getting loose and then the Avocet would stop responding. Ideally some way of mounting the cable either as is or straight down at the back of the unit would be perfect.

I guess I'd maybe also like some way to label all the sources, so I can show clients at attended sessions how to switch pre and post processing, but thats really minor.

I wonder what Dave would say if I went all Jaakko on it, and labelled it up with a Dymo gun?

Glad to hear it!  Very Happy

the annoying this about the avocet and trying to mount it into a surface, is the DB9 (or is it DB15?) connector on the back takes up so much room.
when i had mine, i bought the smallest 90deg adaptor i could find as i was going to mount it into rack plate.

Don't use the Dymo anymore, too squishy and the labels keep falling off.

Anyway, I'd think the response would be pretty much the same as it would if I went and told that I like to clip the HEDD from time to time and people actually pay me for that.

Yup, I've done that too and got paid for it!

That's a nice way to mount it. Our Avocet just sits like a lump on the right hand side of a Sterling plan B desk. It's an awkward box but at least it doesn't take up any console rack space in front of you.
