I bought this mic recently. It sounds fantastic, as a U87i should, but I took the head basket off, to check the condition and date and found the initials or abbreviation “hq” written on it. I have never seen this either on another U87i or pictures on any forum.
I believe the microphone was made in 1978, but I’m wondering if this indicates a technician who serviced the mic or if it was possibly reskinned. It sounds excellent so I don’t really have complaints, just very curious.
Thanks
Robert

The capsule is period-correct for a 1978 mic, confirmed by the "8" on the diaphragm ring.

Thank you Klaus! If you have a moment, do you know what the HQ stands for?

In addition to the manufacturing year you would have (my speculation) the name of the assembler, possibly the assembly station and batch.

Thanks for taking the time to answer Klaus!
