Title: What are your current favorites?
Post by: bblackwood on April 23, 2004, 01:45:09 AM
What are your current favorite release? What do you find yourself listening to over and over again? Whether it be for the engineering and/or musical qualities, what do you love to listen to right now?

All the old Rainbow records. Which is remastered at sane levels by the way.

Hot Snakes - Suicide Invoice. Super loud and compressed in a totally appropriate rocking kind of way.

T.Rex - Electric Warrior. Great tunes.

Michael Jackson - Dangerous. Better than Bad, it's good.

I guess most of these aren't current...

that hot snakes record RULES.  i'll have to pull it back out now that you mention it.  it's good to have "drive like jehu" back in action....sorta.

John Vanderslice = Cellar Door, incredible record.  john goes a slightly different direction with his writing, and nails it.  production is simply superb, and the detail given to each song makes it a record worth owning ona sonic level alone.  the imagery john paints with lyrics always leaves you wondering what hand of cards he was delt, of if he's just a great story teller.

Bjork = Homogenic, when bjork opens her mouth, she has my attnetion.  her voice, melodies, counter melodies are so infectious and brilliant you just can't stop listening.  i'll back up a bridge part just to try and figure out how she came up with that (and i never fast forward or rewind).  only peter grabriel can bend my emotions to his will like brjork can.  truly brilliant artist she is.

Juno = a future lived in past tense, i haven't stopped spinning this disc since i got it three years ago, that should say enough!

My favourite record for some years now:
Dave Mattews' Band: before these crowed streets.

Great songs, great musicians and great sound!

Greetings,

Discordance Axis - the inalienable dreamless

Although I'm not too fond of the production on this record, it's one of the few grind records that I've heard where the drums aren't all smashed to hell. The snare gets a litte quieter during blast beats, but hey, that's ok. That's how it works. It's called dynamics. Dynamics in metal? Wha happan? It really works well for this album. Of course, Witte is an unbelievable drummer, so that helps too...

Tortoise - it's all around you

One of the only bands doing anything exciting these days. This record is by far the most subtle of their catalogue, some people are calling it "boring", but for us audio geeks it is a feast. So many little audio treats! John McEntire is by far the most innovative engineer out there these days (in my opinion). Keying the cymbal comp with the high hat? Fucking genius! If you like clever studio trickery then check this shit out.

I've spent more time in the last few weeks listening to "Etta James Rocks The House" (a live recording from about 1963) and Hayseed Dixie's "Hillbilly Tribute to Mountain Love" than anything else. It's all about the performances.

Acoustician-dad-in-law took one look at the old stereo setup in the apartment and cringed, so now there's a  KEF/B&O/NAD/Apt/Holman/Nakamichi/Advent/Dolby/Ariston/et c. two-racks-wide monstrosity with four power amps, commercial-install power sequencers, a Sony broadcast monitor, outboard Dolby boxes for the cassette decks, and two turntables. In an apartment.

So I've been going back and listening to all my old vinyl recently, and, um...uh...er...

...I still think the second a-ha album, "Scoundrel Days", is one of the most underrated albums of all time.

Aside from embarrassing 80's stuff, my favorite 'new stuff' is all at least a year old, but it's what I've been listening to lately, along the lines of:

Alpinestars "White Noise"
The Faint "Danse Macabre"
Panjabi MC "Beware"
Primal Scream "Evil Heat"
etc.

...while anxiously waiting for a good 'rock' album to come out, and I don't mean "The Darkness".  Very Happy

1) Scholastic Deth (s/t? - it's their last one) 7" LP (it's long for H/C)
Awesome songs, Awesome band, Awesome record. Sounds BAD in a really cool way.

2) Gangstarr "The Ownerz"
DJ Premier has a formula, and he should NEVER stop using it. Overall, not as strong as the earlier records, but some damn good songs to be had.

3) Bob Marley "songs of freedom" box set.
I originally bought the "catch a fire" CD for the song "concrete jungle".
But somebody re-mastered all the Bob Marley Lp's and it SUCKS!
So I bought a $50 box set (the only one that hasn't been remastered) to hear one UNSMASHED song. I suppose loudness DOES sell records in a roundabout, rip-you-off kinda way.

Taj Mahal: The Real Thing.

It`s a live Taj Mahal album.

I could listen to the 2nd tune (instrumental with whistling) all day long. Just beutifull mellodies and incredible soloists.

It`s starting to make me want to throw out my compressors.

The things that jump out at you intentionally because the instrumentalists intended it to is making me wonder why we feel the need to squash things so much.

Everything on that album just bubbles in such a natural fluid way even though it`s really rhythmical as well.

Hey Sui-city, If you like Fennesz, check out an album he did called Endless Summer. It's fantastic, totally mellow sleepytime music.

Hey Mid-Fi!

Thanks, but already got that one. It is indeed great, but this newest one of his is doing my head in. Loving it.

There is always "Live in Japan", solo guitar and laptop. Brilliant!

Glad to find a place loaded with music-lovers!

i need to get this record. "millions now living.." is a masterpiece musically/production wise (you can't really separate the two with this band).

the new Beauty Pill record is good. not as good as the ep and the last smart went crazy album, but better than most stuff out there.

not too knew, but Dead Meadow's last record is brilliant, and is the most unsmashed new record to come out in years (thanks to Greg Calbi).

of course, the real highlight this year is probably gonna be the new Mission of Burma record. i hear it's coming out on SACD too. can't wait!

Been pulling out old favorites to get my head around my new monitors. Not that many current releases unfortunately sound all that.
Roxy Music "Avalon" remastered
Toy Matinee "Toy Matinee" special edition remaster
Fiona Apple "The Pawn....."
Los Lobos "Kiko" and "This Time"
assorted old stuff I've done
Man, it's been fun to listen lately.

I don't buy to many cd's lately. Probably due to the lp archiving I do. Here are a list of some of my favs.

Dick Hyman/Mary Mayo-MoonGas
The title of this one says it all...Here is one of the greatest proto-futuristic space lounge records of all time...Theremin, Lowery Organ, tape splicing, fuzzed  for this one....period masterpiece...

Mickey Baker-But Wild
On sabbatical from his new home in Paris, Baker returns to the USA for a short run in '62 to merge gritty blues based intensity with kitschy danceable surf-type arrangements for a period…..classic..indispenseable

Albert Collins-The Cool Sound Of Albert Collins
Texas truck driver and Telecaster slinger Collins started out on the highest of notes with a classic
first lp..This record smokes from start to finish with blasting runs and flurries of tasty notes backed by the beefiest funkiest horn section this side a Tuscaloosa....One of the 1960's greatest blues
records...PERIOD...

Pierre Cavalli-Sitting On My Guitar
Obscure European Guitar Master Cavalli created a masterpiece of diverse styles in this recording...culminating in jaunts into Bossa Nova, Psychedelia, Western Swing and Jazz... one is struck by not only the highly competetent technique but the ability to transform a lifetime of musical experiences into one very coherent work...Brilliant

Grassela Oliphant-The Grass Is Greener
One of the sleeper jazz recordings of the '60s..This session merges straight ahead jazz with some sass and wit and grooves so phat you can launch the Spanish Armada to the new world in less than a day(usually a 3 month trek).... Organist John Patton, Guitarman Grant Green and Session lead New Orleans drummer Oliphant are massive and then Clark Terry..whose done it all from Elington to Monk and BEYOND..is simply a marvel... unselfconscious sophistication and Pure FUN

SOOO many More.
Ed

I also don't buy many new albums.

I can only think of two that I have bought in the last 6 months that have impressed me:

White Stipes - Elephant,  beautifully produced and mastered

Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles (single)

Neither of these is very recent. I tend to listen to old music and these are my current favorites:

Joni Mitchell - Blue
Tory Amos - Little Earthquakes
Leonard Cohen - Greatest Hits
Doors - LA Woman, DCC mastered by Steve Hoffman
Elvis - 24 Karat hits, DCC mastered by Steve Hoffman
Beatles - Rubber Soul
Pat Metheny/Charley Haden - Beyond The Missouri Sky
Frank Sinatra - Live at the Sands (Remastered)
Al Stewart - Year of the Cat
Dire Straits - On Every Street
Janis Ian - Between The Lines
Diana Krall - When I Look In Your Eyes
Crowded House - Woodface
Jackson Browne - The Pretender, DCC mastered by Steve Hoffman
Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac
Cat Stevens - tea For The Tillerman/teaser and the Firecat
Moody Blues - This Is The Moody Blues

All these are the original versions unless stated.

I could go on and list another twenty or thirty. Sorry if this is off topic.

Best Regards

Phoenix - Alphabetical.

The best album I've heard in years. French pop with a twist. Extremely bright songwriting, with nods to Todd Rundgren and Dr. Dre

Steely Dan - Katy Lied.

I listen to this album A LOT. Fantastic songs, incredible drumming and perfect production. Years of inspiration.

Shuggie Otis - Inspiration/Information

The guy who turned down the position as rhythm guitarist in The Rolling Stones.

Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy

Nina Nastasia's "The Blackened Air" is one of my favorites, as is her newer release "Run to Ruin".  The last two Beck albums and "Talkie Walkie" by Air seem to be my most listened to albums.

Another exceptionally well produced record that is sadly overlooked is "Point" by Cornelius. This thing sounds fantastic no matter what you're listening on.
