Title: Feline friends in the studio
Post by: Rod Affleck on April 16, 2006, 09:05:55 PM
Hey Steve (and anyone else who has experience or knowledge in the subject),

I know that Electrical has had some cats in the past (rip Fluss). I have a little cat in my home studio who feels he has to "help" me out when I do recording. The problem: Scraps's idea of helping is to attack and chew any and all wires he sees. Speaker cables, patch cords, you name it.

Do you have any ideas I  could try to keep him from chewing wires and making a general nuisance of himself? I suppose I could just have some kind of exposed live 110V wire and he'd soon learn, but I'd prefer a more humane solution (not to mention one that would ensure I'd still have a cat after he's been trained.)

Thanks,

r a

Vaseline and cayenne pepper...  let the cat at the cables once... they won't try it again.  (Once trained remove the vaseline and cayenne).

We keep the cats away from the studios and performance spaces. They are only allowed in the lounge and other "public" spaces. We can even remove them entirely if a client wishes, though nobody ever has.

Ditto, close the door.  Cat hair could be uninviting to clients.  So could vaseline and cayenne pepper.

We had two Cat's back home and one would hop up one the console and walk across Shocked .. He didn't shed much in general and I loved him but, I finally decided to keep him out. This pissed him off a little for a while but, he got over it.

My step son now has him and I think he misses his Mixing gig Smile I get to see him a few times per year. We miss him.

I always kept my cat out of the basement studio. Every once in a while she would sneak down when someone left the door open, (cause, as you know, curiosity killed the cat), and she would snoop around very guiltily and try to avoid being caught and removed. The last time she was there she got hysterical and travelled a couple of walls, the console and my monitors, so that I now have an NS10 with a bashed in corner and bent tweeter grill. That pissed me off. Love the cat tho...

Good question, and here's another:

Steve, have you NEVER had a client with cat allergies? Personally I probably could not work in your studio because of the cats. I know of a few other engineers that have cats, and I'm curious how that goes with clients.

It seems like in a studio, where people spend hours on end in this one space, cats would be bad for business.

I'm right there with you hollis.  Once I helped some friends record a record at a house about 6 hours away from home many years ago.  They had a cat, and even though it was kept away from us, I just about died that weekend.  It was absolutely worse than any other sickness I've ever had, including any flu.

It isn't that rare either, another guy who was in the band almost had to be hospitalized with asthma attacks.

I do think that some cats' hair dander and saliva are far more allergenic than others.  That one was a real killer.

I do think it is a bit of a turn off for potential clients.  And plenty of people just plain don't like cats.  I don't necessarily hate them, but I can't get close enough to find out anyways.

I had one guy that was allergic to cats. I gave him a towel to put over his face, he didn't complain.

My new cat, Calista, is a cute as a bunny Calico Manx with a funny nub tail that wiggles. I can't keep her off the gear, it's too funny to watch.

When she walks/sits on the console she invariably pushes down a few switches. When I power up I do a check now for solos and bussing that's a bit off.

My ex-wife, may she rest in peace, was allergic to cats. She'd sometimes have a reaction just going into a room where a cat has been, so the physical presence of the cat isn't always necessary to get the sneezing, watering eyes and runny nose.

My cat is a wannabe mix engineer as well. I have to un-buss, un-mute, un-HPF, and un-solo all her hard work each day.

She's not allowed around when clients are present.

She apparently likes Portugese Absinthe as well.

Thanks for the suggestions and commiserations everyone. It is very much a case of he's not allowed in recording areas, but sometimes he sneaks in. Cayenne and vaseline sounded a bit harsh, so I tried some lemon juice. It seems to be helping.

I'm also relieved to know that I'm not the only one with an alcoholic cat.

I bought a used console from a guy recently and upon inspection noticed a cat had at some point urinated on it. Took the automation out via corrosion where the wiring from the control/display connected to the mainboard. An easy fix that could have been disasterious on a Mackie PCB design or something with an internal PSU.

Needless to say cats are not allowed within the womb unsupervised. Kids either...

Cat dander isn't good for the faders either.

Rice Crispies tend to make a mess.

Great absinthe cat picture!

I'm very lucky to have a cooperative studio cat.

He never disturbs anything, can be trusted around mics,
and will let you know when the mix is just right.

The cat has seriously affected my recording work-

I think if all mixes had to be cat-approved they'd
be a lot easier on human ears too...

Wire chewing: If your cat is past the teething stage I'd make sure that it's getting proper minerals. When animals start to chew on metal and other wierd things it's called "cribbing." Sometimes it's a mineral deficiency. Other times it's an OCD disorder.

a piece of rack gear left my room that was lower in the rack.  my cat was quick to figure out he could climb back there and have a very secluded, quiet, and warm place for an afternoon nap that my 2 year old couldn't find him.

imagine my reaction when i went to tweak a compressor and had a pair of eyes looking at me through the dark hole in the rack.

this is the same cat that at 3 months of age he knocked over a beer of mine and was lapping it up off the carpet as fast as he could until i heard something strange, looked down and lept up to clean up the mess.  notice i didn't punish him.......beer drinking is strongly encouraged in my house.

Steve may not remember, but people have requested that in the past, and we've removed them for a period.
Unfortunately, Steve does not believe that people can be allergic to cats.   I am sensitive to this, because I am allergic to cats.  The common areas are usually kept clean enough to not bother me though.

I too have a couple of cats. They are not allowed in the studio. I have had clients alergic to cats, have a reaction. Even tho the cats never go in the studio, and clients still react, I purchase a cheap ionic air purifier and that did the trick. An added perk was the now lack of dust on the CRT monitor as well as the console.

I couldn't find any info using a quick google search, but I seem to recall reading some comments that suggested that ionic purifiers and delicate electronics gear may not get along that well. It could  be that I'm mis-remembering, but the stories I (think I) read were sufficiently scary to cause me to not get an ionic purifier.

I've had one in the tracking room, one in the CR, and 3 at home now for several years with no problems. Keep in mind, the ones I have are not weapons grade, they are the "Pure air" brand name and are somewhere between $50 and $75 each

Many of the ionic type generate a good bit of ozone which reacts with (neutralizes) odors and makes the air smell slightly sweet.  I don’t know if you have noticed, but that expensive one they have been pushing on TV (something like ‘5 easy payments of $69.95’) came out with a new version a few months ago that contained a catalytic converter to remove the ozone.  I seriously doubt if they did that as strictly a marketing ploy.

Anyway, ozone is great for removing smells, oxidizing mildew in damp places, rusting iron and steel, corroding up electrical contacts, etc.  It will even ‘rot-out’ your carpet and cushion covers if they are exposed long enough.  It’s probably OK to use one occasionally for a couple of days, but I wouldn’t recommend using one continuously in a studio.

Consumer Reports wrote a scathing negative review of the "Ionic Breeze," basically saying that it's not only ineffective as an air purifier, it generates an excessive amount of ozone.  Natch,  CR was sued by the manufacturer over the review, and the lawsuit was thrown out of court.

Since I have put my XJ 2000 ionic air purifier in I have noticed an absense of dust on all of the CRT monitors, and surface dust on the console. A few years ago when we had the fires here in So Cal. is when I got these machines. Outside there was ash all over the ground. For about 2 weeks, I had to clean the plates on the purifier every day in the studio. It was after that, that a client with cat alergies asked if I got rid of the cats. The cats have never been in the studio, but previously, it still used to affect him. Since getting these machines everything is fine.
As far as cats on the console? Highly not recommended. Cat hair and dander getting into the faders and pots will eventually result

I don't understand how someone can invest so much in a studio and necessary equipment, and let a cat walk all over everything.  But hey, if it's your home studio, you do whatever you want.

But as far as having animals (cats, dogs, birds, whatever) in a commercial facility, it's very unprofessional.  The cats at Electrical are reason enough for me to never book a session there.

There was a cat at a major studio on memphis for years. I think it was just there so the interns would have to clean it's shit up and get tired of it and quit. There was one at another studio here too, one day it got in the control room and ate a few cables. 2nd to last straw. Then got in again, jumped up on an NS 10 and knocked it onto the Neve VR bending a few filter and comp knobs. Now the cat is at a happy home at a vietemese resturant. just kidding, i think one of the engineers took it. i believe in NO pets in studio. Unless they are penthouse pets or playboy bunnies.

I always let my cat Wella wander in and out of my studio setup. It's a pain in the ass sometimes (I swear there's a meow or two on takes...), but I always find it funny. She'll sit and mix with me too, right on my lap. It's sort of morale boosting....she'll like anything, just as long as she can be around me doing it. She's truly something special.

Now the internet---she don't like that too much, she always walks in front of the keyboard and gets in the way, but the console she never ever goes on. Never had to tell her that, either.

So what kinda cat should i get for a better sound in the control room?
I read that Siammes are good for those satin highs and punchy lows if you get two of them they are great for master stereo balance.

But the british short hair cat is suppose to be the best
but the prices these day are ridiculous for a british short hair cat.
I know, I know there are modern versions(clones) of them made from companies like Dan Alexader,Brett Averill, Vintech, ect.
which offer them at 1/2 the cost of an original

then there's plugin versions which some people swear that you can't tell the difference.

I've always liked working in studios with cats.  I've had several interesting experiences with cats leaving the control room when the music was bad, and sticking around when it's good.

My own cat tends to go after the LEDs on my Keypexes and Gain Brains when I'm mixing...

My cat seems to have better ears than I do. Whenever I'm working on a mix, she likes to climb up and lie on one of the monitors (she seems to prefer the left one).
Once in a while, something will seem to annoy her and she'll climb down. It's usually when something is out of balace or overly eq'd or proccessed.
Inevitably, once I get the mix together, she resumes her place on the speaker cabinet and stays until the end of the session (or until I break for lunch).
And no, I can't say that I've noticed my stereo image leaning to the left to compensate for any high frequency absorption that she may supply.
I don't know what I'll do if I am ever without my mixes' most insightful critic!!

Or, "In China, you'd be a Happy Meal!"    ... that gets em.

I once new an engineer that would not allow people to smoke stoges in the control room, yet, he smoked pot in there like Cheech and Chong. Said: "Cigarette smokes sticks to everything."

I wonder what pet dander will do to tape heads?

Do you have to clean out the fans in the gear periodically?
