Hey, thanks. That was easy.

Ok, now I have a red wire connected to pin 3 and a blue wire connected to pin 2 of the XLR....

Now when after I get the X-frmer out ...

Where will the red and blue wires be reconnected to the yellow and green wires in the upper half?

Ok, I think I got it.

Looks like the green connects to the blue and they both go to pin 2.

And the yellow connects to the red and they go to pin 3.

Has anybody taken the top section apart?

Looks like there's a bolt and a little washer there....Heh heh...

Ok, removing that gets the upper housing part way disassembled....got some yellow tape in there...hmmm

Maybe someone else will see something exciting in the upper part...I dunno...

I guess there are some replaceable parts like an r57 or something....or even the screen and grill...

I'm fun at Christmas...but sometimes I have extra bolts and screws left over...

Or just screws loose...

We already knew that!

All of the omes I took apart had three wires coming from the cartridge, and three wires connected to the XLR.

Also they all had one terminal on the cartridge-end labeled as "A," which is the hot, and which goes to pin 2 of the XLR.

Perhaps you don't have a ground wire, and that is carried through the case?  Or were some 57's unbalanced?

What vintage is this one?

I'm sure this one must be one of the newer el cheapo models....

I don't see any serial nos. or identifying marks...so I'm gonna go with calling it a new one made in Mexico

On closer look of the XLR part I see that pin 1 is soldered to a fin-shaped piece of metal that probably *does* touch the body...

Good one for spotting that.

The worse that can happen when I solder it back up is it will be outta phase....

But I think the way I said to do it in the above post will be the right way...

For the re-wire job, I think I'm gonna drill out the hole a bit to make it larger so I can use some standard mic cable which is shielded...

Better cable never hurt anything.  I used Mogami inside mine.

Yep, my now mod'ed mic is working like a champ...sounds not unlike they way I remember somebody else's modded mic I used in the past...heh heh

I just never tried doing the mod myself...

too lazy I guess...plus I hate the smell of solder and don't much like fooling with sticky silicon goo shit...

The only sticky stuff I like to play with belong to young..

ah nevermind...

Anyway...I'm happy with the mic experiment...

It would be nice if there were an exploded diagram of the SM57 that showed all the parts...

Depends on how well the phantom power is balanced between the two inputs. With 1% 6.81 k resistors, a mismatch of around 1/2 volt can be seen. Matching the phantom resistors to .1% will keep any mismatch under a few millivolts and should be safe from accidental phantom switching. Any voltage across this dynamic element should be avoided as it causes the element to offset from it's natural position, if not burn up the wires.
