Have to be a small one.  Not a whole lot of space with the trans in there. You'd have a hell of a time punching thru the mic body as well. That sucker is structural Laughing .

I think you'd still have to pull the trans to get the wiring done as well.

Hello

This sounds exciting so I've been looking on-line for a replacement external transformer for my modification experiment.   I've found a Cinemag transformer at http://www.cinemag.biz/mic_input/mic_input.html   My question for Jim is.  What is the output impedance of the actual capsule part of the microphone?     I was considering the Cinemag CMMI-2C 150 : 600 ratio model.  Would one of these Cinemag xformers work for me?  Looks like these transformers satisfy the condition of an unmodified 57 output.

Thanks

It was my understanding that the 57 grew out of the 56 (I own one). The 56 looks just like a 57 but has a swivel connection straight to the mic stand. Basically a 57 with it's own swivel mic clip built in. Identical sound.

From the sound of people's posts, I'd say we can call this experiment "a success."

Chalk one up for "the good guys"....em...I mean "experimenters"...

Yeah, that's the ticket...experimentation...

Who knew?

I live in Juarez, and thankfully I can get 57s at a discount price direct from the factory. I'll be trying that mod ...
How many pesos are they going for? Are you able to get other mics discounted too? What about SM7's?

Im curious what phantom power will do to this mic now that the transformer is gone. If it is feeding straight into the capsule surely 48v will destroy it?

Interesting question.  I don't know, but hopefully some expert will enlighten us.

It would not *pop* instantly, but I believe 48v would burn it up *shortly*..

No pun..

No evidence, just a tempered guesstimation. I have pulled a couple apart to look at the entrails.

Nope, ya got one side of a 48 volt line tied to both ends of the same coil. The negative side of the 48 volts is tied to the shell. They never come together to complete the circuit.

I'm just looking for some good data or links to resources that people can share simply because the SM57 is so common and ubiquitious.

I'm glad to know it is BOTH "common" AND "ubiquitous."

Indeed it sounds interesting about the transformer removal.  Has anyone done this, and can supply a full report?

Really? That works then! I just remember the windings being very fine.

Ok, I finally grabbed one here.

I got the top separated from the bottom half...I just cut the two wires (one is yellow and the other wire is green)

But I'm not seeing an easy way to get the XLR out before boiling....there appears to be a little set screw on the side of the lower housing...what's that do?

Anyway, can anyone tell me how to get the XLR out?

Using a tiny flathead sd, screw anti-clockwise, driving the screw downwards, thus relieving it from the little hole.  Then you can pull out the xlr with needlenose.  When you place it back in, the screw comes upwards to hold the connector in place.

Salt to taste.
