Yes, black. Easily overlooked as the right mic for the job, 9/10.

I don't know about troll, appears to be English..

the options that i have so far include..

4 sennheiser E604
2 Neumann U87
1 sennheiser 421-U4
1 akg C414b xls matched pair
1 royer R121
1 SE electronics Gemini
I'm not sure about a kick mic.. perhaps the E602?

this list is from a couple of lists that others have researched and I'm just trying to define what the best choices are.. I want to have the capability for quality recording of as many instruments/styles as possible.. and some voiceover work..

What do the knowledgable people think! Razz

also, do you think there's any place/reason for sm57/58s in a studio? or would you recommend other options?

Keep in mind the responses will be very subjective...but I think you could drop the senn's for an audix drum mic pack.  They'd certainly offer you more versatility than 4 of the same mic given the small list.  In addition to that, toss in a few 57's...sometimes they are the best mic for a given source, and they're cheap.  I have no experience with the SE mic, so I can't comment on it.  I might suggest a Lawson combo pack to give you some versatility in the vocals department...the combo pack from Lawson could easily cover +90% of your vocal duties, from sibilant girlies to god-like voiceovers.  The rest of the list looks good to me...though I question the need for the single royer...a pair would be nice, but do you need them for your situation and would the money be better spent elsewhere.

you also missing a good selection of small diaphram condencers
through in a pair of C4s they would get the job done, and keep costs down. also a couple of favorites of mine are the AT4047 and the CAD M9. they cover both ends of the spectrum, the 4047 is dirty and dark and the M9 is a saint.

a work on the audix drum mic pac, steer clear of the fusion pack. i have one used it twice. i would feel bad about it, but i didnt pay but 50 for it.

Ditto on the fusion, I was talking along the lines of a DP5 (1xD1,2xD2,1xD4,1xD6).  The fusion line is downright awful.

A major consideration is whether the studio will be recording mainly commercials and voiceovers, or full albums.  That would change some of the mic choices.
