hits were mixed on mackie 8bus.. man.. common.. I'm lowbudget too.. you can even mix in the box with mackiepres and shure sm-mices with decent results.. goldrecords on RME multiface and cubase sx? no problem, I can give you some names..
do you have a good sounding room? no.. then just don't start to buy gear..

i participated in one record [bass, some keys and drums] that was done in a normal old office building no acoustic treatment, just regular mics, 4 ch john hardy pres and mackie pres the rest...
it was mixed on a mackie 8 buss by ken hiwatt marshall and mastered by anthony fu valcic at the enterprise in la.
i still cannot believe how good it turned out sonically considering the lo budget nature of the project, cheep sm57 stylee mics and 100 dollar drum kit..
[note that the recording engineer fu man was /is a genius at tuning the drums, hint hint]
