sidechain
« on: October 31, 2005, 06:49:56 AM »

what usually happens with me when i get rock tunes to work on is as long as the mix is well balanced i find i can get a smooth sounding compression quite easily.
However, i have a question that may seem a bit stupid...
is it normal to use the sidechain on the comp so that the low end is'nt affecting the comp as much? cause when i dont use it  on this particular mix the kick drum just leaps out of the speakers!!! it seems to pull the low end up too much.
Am i a fool? i never encountered this before, i always thought the sidechain filter was for not squashing the highs?
cheers,

Not a stupid question at all.
You can use the side chain to "control" the response of a compressor in general, it isn't restricted to the highs or the lows.
Yes I use it from timre to time, when needed and i suppose most on this board do the same.

what i like to do with my sidechain sometimes, is make the compressor a look ahead compressor.. it can smooth it out sometimes.

make a copy of the track in your DAW
one copy is going into your compressor/limiter
the other copy is going into the sidechain input.
now just push the copy going into the sidechain forward 2ms or so.

sometimes for some de-essing i might use the sidechain too..

i'm going to try your method this afternoon as it seems to be a nice sudo-multiband trick Smile as i really don't like to use multibands Smile Smile

well, i nailed it guys!
cheers for the replies, basically i used the C1 on split side chain mode to control that kick drum, then had to go multiband for the first time in ages to smooth out some of the mids.
It really worked a treat, and am so glad I won't need to listen to that bloomin song again! only joking of course.
cheers,
