ZZ Top Lick
« on: October 20, 2005, 02:45:32 PM »

Hey Dudes,

I saw in one of the posts in the archives that someone asked Terry Manning about the solo section in "Bad, Nationwide."

Fret the root and the octave of the chord, palm mute at the bridge, and then chicken-pick the notes with the right hand.  When I chicken pick, I usually hold the pick with the thumb and the index finger, and then use the middle and ring fingers to pick the other notes.

Hope this helps!

Chick 'n pick 'n may be banned in Australia soon (Not that it was ever popular here) due to the deadly Bird Flu Virus in our region.

I think it may have been planted as a conspiracy to kill off ZZ Top fans and Hillbilly's. Cool

That was me.

Probably a stupid question in retrospect. Don't think I know many of the licks of bands I've recorded. But you can bet I would pay plenty of attention to Billy G if I was tracking him!

Hmmm, chickin' pickin' PLUS palm muting? Can't say I've ever tried that. I'll definitely give that one a try. I'll just have to risk the flu thing.

That is a kickass thread, Terry really shared a wealth of Top info.

Cool!  Hope I was able to be of some help.  That's what he's doing.

The plucking and muting thing is a BG standard.  He's the man.

I agree, I too enjoyed that thread with Terry.  It was fascinating!!!

Yep - that's how to play it. Still, it's a skill to get it to feel right.

BTW - Gibbons once played guitar with me and showed me some bits I wanted to know...

#1- Heard it on the X: tune the A-string down to G, then the whole lick is just an easy thing on the ADG strings (until you hit the low E at the end). Makes it EASY to play...

#2 - Blue Jean Blues (one of the best recordings I've ever heard): the opening solos are played around the 7th and 9th frets on the bass strings, but plucked **at the same time** with the open B string. Makes it sound thicker and cooler!
