Perhaps less needs to become more?
« on: October 17, 2005, 04:25:21 PM »

I have been reading many posts about loudness lately. The following is mostly in jest:

New Super Impact +15db Disk!

A revolution in technology! Plays on your existing CD player!

Simply insert disk. Press play and follow the instructions.

[audible voice-over, in soothing yet confident tones: this disk will sound odd at first-you must take control of your volume knob and turn up approximately 1/4 turn. Sit back and experience +15db technology!]

The music hits [with rms down -15dbfs or so..] and the music is slamming. Its amazing!

***caution-this disk is so 'loud' it may max out your system****

Razz  Razz  Razz  Shocked

err, I guess most ipods might not have the headroom? Hehe.

I just saw a documentary on the Ramones, and it had a clip from a magazine stating their LP was the loudest ever and that expensive gear at Sterling was damaged in this pursuit.....

New, Sun, etc.

Yeah I know-same cr*p, new day.

Just a playful nod to the fact that perception [and thus marketing] is so powerful. Make the Minus a Plus!

I saw an old clip of the Ramones on David Letterman. They were saying that they were the only real rock and roll band and the rest were phonies. Letterman asked them for an example and they said Styx sucked. ha ha ha, no surprise that a 3 chord band that stole all their progressions from Chuck Berry, can't understand real arranging, composition and what it takes to master guitar and vocal harmony. Styx plays 4 chords on their songs.  Laughing

I just mastered Tommy Ramone's new CD. Very cool traditional bluegrass/folk kinda thang. He is very smart guy and made it clear to me he was not a "loudness freak" so he did not want the sound of the album smashed or hyperlimited. The quality of the recording was very good and he was pleased with what I was able to bring to it. It was a bit surreal however to be sitting there with the original Ramones drummer and have him ask how much L2 I was using.....
