I need help making a cable...
« on: October 06, 2005, 06:41:52 PM »

I bought the Redco Little Red Cue Box (headphone distribution).

I'm coming out of a SPL 2381 via (2) 1/4 inch balanced L and R.

I'm going into the Red Cue Box via XLR In.

How do I make this happen?

Your help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Most likely...As long as you're Pin 2 hot.
Pin 1=Tip
Pin 2=ring
Pin 3=shield

Tim,

Thanks for posting.

Say I connect it:

Pin 1=Tip
Pin 2=ring
Pin 3=shield

How do I make connections to the 2 balanced 1/4 inch jacks? This has to end up being a Y cable.

From the XLR, does:

Pin 1 connect to the Left 1/4 inch Tip

Pin 2 connect to the right 1/4 inch Ring

...and both 1/4 inch are are Pin 3 shield?

Thanks again in advance.

Headphone systems are usually a straight 3 wire deal, where there is a left, right, and a ground.  I think Timrob gave you the right answer.

Is this a passive headphone distribution box? (no AC or DC power plug).  If so, then it is designed to be fed from a high power amplifier. You have to make special cables from the amplifier terminals to XLR. Pin 2 is left channel, 3 is right, and 1 is common. So use an amplifier that permits you to have a common signal for left and right. DO NOT USE A POWER AMPLIFIER WITH FLOATING OUTPUTS!

If the SPL is a power amplifier (30 watts and up), then you want to construct adapters that go from the two 1/4" outputs to the pins of a male XLR as I described above.

bob is right (like THAT'S a surprise)...

it is a PASSIVE box.  so heed his first warning.  i have one.  it works GREAT with the right amp.  if you are unsure technically, contact SPL or Redco.

i use mine with the Dangerous MQ which has a specially designed circuit for it and i just use a regular cable.  from the manual:

"The Cue Amp Out jacks are for feeding two separate sets of headphones. The two power amplifiers can drive several pairs of medium impedance headphones each (like Sony MDR series for example). Since the XLR?s are at full amplifier level, they are designed to drive a headphone level control box like the Redco Little Red Cue Box or similar devices. Connector pinouts and sources are listed on the ?Connector Pinouts? page of this manual."
....AND
"Cue Amp Outputs
1 audio common
2 left power amp +
3 right power amp +
The cue amps are rated for .006% THD+N at 20 watts per channel into 8 ohms. They are not heat-sinked to drive speaker loads. They can drive several pairs of headphones to way beyond comfortable levels. Please use caution driving headphones to not damage equipment or injure the talent! The XLR outputs are designed to feed cue boxes like the Redco Little Red Cue Box or similar devices available at pro audio dealers or from Redco.com"

maybe that helps......

This is what I get for not proofing my post at the end of the day.

sorry it should read:

Pin 1 = shield
Pin 2 = tip
Pin 3 = Ring

I'm a moron.

Hey y'all, thanks for your input. I appreciate it.

Bob, what do you mean by: DO NOT USE A POWER AMPLIFIER WITH FLOATING OUTPUTS!

Thanks!

A power amp that had floating outputs does NOT have a common connection between the "colds/minuses" of each channel's output.

OTOH, something like an old Crown D-150, DC-300 (and many newer amps) DO have a common "cold", which is almost always connected to chassis ground of the amp.  That design will work with the type of system you describe since both channels can share the common return  wire.

There are a very few power amplifiers around where the low side of the speaker output is not grounded. As long as you feed it into a balanced input you're fine, otherwise you can hose the amplifier if you ground the output, or at least make it mighty uncomfortable!

My Pass X250 is one of those. I think some of the digital amps are like that, too.
