Help choosing my 1st quality condenser mic
« on: September 22, 2005, 04:14:09 PM »

I am looking to spend $2000 on a condenser mic which I will use for vocals and distance/room miking for guitars/drums. I have looked at Neumann U87, Mojave MA200, AKG 414, BLUE baby bottle/Blueberry, Schoep. Any ideas would be welcome. Thank you. Bill

I have 2 Neve clones that my friend ordered the parts for and assembled. I also am using the Digidesign 002 Rack with my G4 Powerbook/LaCie firewire drive. Thank you

I'm not sure that I would expect one mic to be good in both these applications.  The U87 will certainly give you the most customer recognition factor, and the Mojave the least.

Another option you might consider is a PAIR of multi-pattern LDC mics.  This would open up a lot of flexibility for Blumlein pair, spaced cardioids, etc.

In that application(s) a pair of Shure KSM 44s or AT 4050s would do a lot of things for a long time.

It might be a little more but a pair of Neumann cmv563's would be a boss pair..they are bottle mics with smaller transformers than the venerable cmv3..interchangable capsules..tube..m7's fit on there..

mm looking at vintage king's used list it would be like double actually..so the 563's maybe not an option..

i really like the shure brothers ksm LDC's I have a couple of 27's which I like..also I have soundelux u195 which i like better than the shures which you could most likely get for 2k also..

I was going to suggest a pair of KSM-44s.  I purchased a pair early on and now own 4.  I love them.  Your correct.. a pair of Shure KSM 44s or AT 4050s would do a lot of things for a long time.

A used pair of 87s or silver AKG 414EBs....
On another note, a pair of Coles 4038 ribbon mics....

You can definitely do worse than getting yourself a U87. It is one of those Swiss Army knife type of mics that seems to work on most sources (vox, drums, guitars, bass, etc.). It may not be the *best* mic for a specific source, but it is a great all-arounder, and is a great choice for a first high-end mic.

Are you familiar with Lawson mics?

albeit a U47 clone, they sound great IMO and come in just under 2 Grand.

But is it OK to use a REAL Neumann with a clone Neve pre?  What about a clone Powerbook?  Would that be called a Viao?
