Mastering for DVD
« on: September 14, 2005, 09:22:30 PM »

I've been asked to master the audio portion of a DVD program (live event captured for DVD). This will be a first for me. Is there anything specific to a DVD that I need to know for this - things like: final Fs/bit depth, max level, track layout (are there any IDs on a DVD like there is on a CD?), etc.

Does anyone know of a publication/web page that I can look up that spells all of this out?

Also, I'm assuming that I can extract the audio off of one of their DVDs... Am I correct?

Sorry for sounding dumb. (Everybody's gotta do one for the first time...)

Hey Jeff, here's the quick and dirty answers... YMMV

final Fs/bit depth:  24/48 or 16/48 (or even 24/96)

max level: -3dBFS depending on material

track layout:  "chapter" layout like on a video DVD

web page: http://dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html

there are many others, just google it.

extract audio from DVD ? haven't run into that one,

audio can be PCM, or AC-3, or DTS.

good luck !
