Best D/A for $1000
« on: September 07, 2005, 09:30:29 AM »

I have been using an Echo Layla 24 for a while and it sounds pretty good. Nonetheless I don't need 8 channels and would like to upgrade my D/A stero so I have been seeking advice. I have had Mytek, Benchmark, and Lynx all highly recommended to me, all under $1000. (Sorry Dan, I can't afford Lavry Blues just yet).

Anyone care to weigh in?

Sorry Asher,

But find the extra $325 and get the Lavry Blue ADs. They are worth every penny.

atlasproaudio.com has them for $1325

Sell a relative, mow a few lawns, deliver newspapers. It's worth it.

I am not so concerned about A/D as everything I am doing here is pretty much virtual instruments in the box but D/A so that i can be sure that I  am hearing the truest mix out of my monitors.

Sorry Asher,

I meant to say DAs!

The DAs are $1325 at atlasproaudio.com

Again, they are completely worth it.

yeah man if you can save 1k I'm sure you can wait a little and save a little extra..I'm really really happy with the Lavry Blue Dac..one thing to keep in mind is that you might want a passive volume control after it like the A-Designs ATTY..since they dont sport an output volume control..

Folks, I know the Lavry Blues are great and perhaps I will save up for them.

That said, it would be nice if someone would address my original question.

plenty of pro engineers use Mytek, Benchmark, and Apogee..the Lynx are a little newer and don't have much street cred yet..I use their AES 16 to interface my Lavry dac/adc to the mac..great product..they provide great great support as well and I imagine the converters are of a nice quality..but I never heard them..the benchmark dac-1 has calibrated outs plus an out with a volume knob which might be handy if you need that and dont want to spend an extra 100$ on the ATTY or take the time to build a passive volume control..just pick one and hit record(the internet is not going to answer anything for you like this since its such subjective matter)or you could do the wise thing and get them all in an everyday work situation and see which one you like best..

Out of your list I would choose Benchmark.  All are reputable companies.

But you will have to use your ears to decide.

I also have some Lavry Blue DAs.  Listen to all of us here.  Save your money.  You'll regret going cheap should you ever get the opportunity to hear what you're missing.

I have two DAC1, have not heard the others.
All I can say is if you need something better, then you definately need a long holiday on a beach on a tropical island  Smile
