Motown Drum Questions
« on: August 29, 2005, 12:30:17 PM »

I guess this one is primarily directed to Bob Olhsson, but if anyone has any info please feel free to contribute.
I've heard that the kit was a mix of four different makes, I'm guessing Slingerland,Ludwig,Gretsch,Rogers...the "big four" at the time. Anyone have an idea as to which company made which drum? Did the cymbal setup stay the same? Any idea what they were? Is it true that the heads were never(almost never) changed?
Who tuned them? I've heard that they weren't allowed to be moved or tampered with.
Finally, would anyone care to explain how they were miked, and what was used?
  Thanks in advance.

You need to run (not walk) to your local video store and buy (do not rent) "Standing In the Shadow of Motown".

Ok. I'll get it again. That was the original kit?  They duplicated the mic technique? Better freeze frames this time...

On many of the records, they used two drummers, I believe.  But the "magic" of the Motown sound was in the hands of the musicians they used, not the equipment.  What Jack does with a tambourine is amazing to me.  It drives the shit out of the tracks.  It creates a groove a mile wide.

As I recall, the DVD has a lot of pictures from the old days, showing the drums and the setup.

The old studio pix and info are great.  But the newly performed and filmed "concert" I could not take.
