Yami PM2000 Flex Problems (I hope) pics!!!!
« on: August 02, 2005, 03:29:17 PM »

Hey gang.

So it's 2300 hours, the band left early and will be back tomorrow and I am tearing into my beloved PM 2000 for the first time.

The problem:  Left channel goes out intermittantly and I have to punch/jam random channel or matrix cards with a screwdriver.

This is not very impressive for the client.

I talked to a wonderful man in Arizona...my computer crashed so I don't have his name anymore.  And he was nice enough to recommend some 3M jumper wires to replace the Yamaha stock ones that connect the numerous back planes together.  He told me that the frame is made from Mahogany and contracts and expands due to the environment and the jumpers in the photo eventually develop cold solder joints.  So I am replacing all of them.

So that's pretty much it unless anyone has some adult supervisory comments.

Where can I order some of those jumpers?  That might be handy.  A while back I re-soldered all the back plane jumpers on mine.  It fixed a few problems but I have one that popped back up.  It was a day project to rip the board apart to get at all the solder joints without creating other problems.

As far as the problem as stated... I wonder if it is not a bad contact on the other side of the "mother board" (back plane).  The connection point where the channel connects.  Give it a shot of deoxit.  Also clean the 1/4" send/return/insert connections for that matrix channel.

I guess they have the good stuff here.  What would be the best spray to use?  Deoxit?  Is that the brand name?

I believe you may be right about that being a problem as well since I could wiggle any channel seemingly at random and the left channel would come back.

I also found that cleaning the matrix channel outputs is key.

I ran through the whole schematic and got to the outputs and thought...hmmm....

Also I now have two bad channels I need to troubleshoot.  I have no idea where to begin.

I did pretty good on the resolder job I guess.  It's 0305 in the morning and I am done....four hours, with breaks to read the REP.

I don't know if this is the coveted German Scheisse or not but it was recommended by a technician extrodinaire here.

So I will proceed post haste and endeavor to perservier in de-oxidizing the card plugs and back plane contacts...

Um,

OMFG!!!!!!

Sounds like a board right out of the factory!!!!!

Panning is great!

Thanx for the cleaning suggestion.  I mean the thing is so fukken clear...amazing.

Sound is great and very uniform on all channels.

I thought this board was great when it sounded like shit.

I will post some PM2000 Lingerie shots later....

Glad to hear that it helped.  You will have to send me some mp3's of the session so I can hear your board in action.
