We've repaired about a dozen 250's and 251's over the last few years.  What do we do when a chip goes?  Find one somewhere, by any means necessary.  Smile

MCullen, your mention of LRS sure brings back memories, I worked there for years.  I don't recall a 250 or 251 offhand, but Michael Verdick, who ran the mix room, may have rented one for a while.

The recent clone was the 255, made by Dynatron, who manufactured the logic boards for the original 250's.

BTW, where might one find a set of those EEPROMS to replace the Space function on the 251?

you could just stick a P-Touch label that says 250 on the front of your unit.

Hey Dave - speaking of your good memories; back at the end of January when Cello closed you posted some pictures of good ol' 6000 Sunset from your tenure there. Maybe sometime you could entertain us with some more?

I remember hearing the Dynatron at AES in 99, sounded decent but not what I remember the 250 sounded like at Criteria.
Somewhat limited being it was one room program, I dont recall any modulation features, but had the familiar EMT clarity and top. Maybe it was closer to the 251..?

During my time at OWR (1987-1995 b.c. --- "Before Cello") we had, I think, four 250's?

How many times did I bang the shit out of my toes and ankles rolling those suckers down the hall?

Maybe I should just take a PTouch and label it "IT", like Terry does.  LOL.

Well, the one consolation about the 251 is that it's one more, isn't it?  It goes to 251!

Wittman is right.

The 251 was a poor comparison to the 250.

Back in the early 80's I remember a particularly great sounding one owned by Jeff Porcaro that was parked at the studio I was working at.   It sounded great, but had the annoying habit of making a very loud BANG from time to time.  When I was assisting Greg Ladanyi on the Don Henley album, the machine went off once.  Greg loved the sound  and wanted to capture it.   He wanted to use it as a primitive sampler and fly it into a song.  At Greg's request I spent an evening trying to catch the sound on a 2 track.    Predictably, it never made that sound when being recorded!
