SSL buss comp clone
« on: July 05, 2005, 08:57:23 PM »

i built two of these things a while back.  i don't think i've said much about them.

i've had PLENTY of time to get to know them and i'm ready to discuss.....

they aren't an exact clo ne of the 384....or at least from what i can recall......

but, if you have soldering skills, and some time....i'm loving these things.

after a few tweaks i got them super quiet and i'm pretty much using them on every session.

they are simply awesome on the drum buss.

i found them here (follw the link to the DIY lab for details)

http://www.gyraf.dk/

anyone else build one of these?

BTW, i've found the DIY community on that message board to be massively unhelpful.....your luck might vary.

Hey J - how did you go about getting a pcb for this thing?? Do you have the means to make your own, or is there an "easier" way??

On the subject of PCBs, did you make your own or buy them? I tried emailing the guys selling them, but no response so far Sad  Would love to have a go at building this thing, but I think etching and coating my own pcbs might be a bridge too far...

i got mine from "gustav" on the DIY forum.  decent PCB's and super easy to solder on.

i had each comp completely built up and passing audio in about 12 hours each

one had a weird problem that took some patience to figure out, but it passed audio at least.

both are fully functional and working on every session/song i've mixed in the last three months, which has been MANY.....

Do you ever use it on a mono mult and just not return one of the outputs? Say... like on a sanre. I really need to learn how to build one or four of these.

have not ussed it on a mono source yet.

you don't have to patch to both sides....if you want to do mono, just patch it to the left channel and run it mono.

i thought about trying to separate the channels and add a "stereo link" switch to mine, but i just didn't get to it......

I build one of these recently and am using on the Mix Buss.
Haven't used original ssl or Al Smart version so can't compare though does sound better than anything that i have tried before.Just a gentle 2 or 3 DB tends to work nicely.
