I posted this in the Fletcher Forum also as Mercenary sells these products, but wanted to know if Harvey could share his thoughts...


I need to choose a primary vocal mic but I am unable to spend a lot of time A/Bing.

I am looking for a primary vocal mic for my home based studio. It would be paired with a RNP and used primarily to record male rock/country/blues type sounding vocals.

I know this is a crap question, but just looking for any guidelines or suggestions for picking the best mic for me short of buying both and returning one (which I do not think is too fair to the retailer.)

My God, the Soundelux.  I can't believe it's as cheap as it is.  I use it for everything.  If you haggle with Sweetwater, they'll go down around $900 for it!  It's worth twice that.  One thing to be aware of - there's a pretty hyped up top end on the Soundelux that while it is clear enough to record the color of your sweater, it is, well, hyped.

Just my 2c, a hardline Soundelux fan.

I think that the AEA 84 is pickie about the preamp that it is mated to.    Nothing sounds better than the 84 through my Neve 1084; however, it does not turn my crank with any of my other premium preamps.   On  the other hand I have a closet full of condensor diaphram mics that sound pretty darn good through almost any preamp.    If you are considering the AEA 84 make sure that your preamp  has plenty of gain.
