Mixing Engineer Recommendation NJ
« on: June 29, 2005, 12:03:19 PM »

Hi (I also posted this in gearslutz)
I'm looking for a top level mixing engineer in New Jersey to help mix tracks I record in my studio. Right now, I'm researching Big Blue Meenie and Shorefire studios. Any other studios or individuals? I can do NYC but trying to avoid extremely high rates. I want to attend sessions which is why I'm looking for someone local. Preferably a place that can take my 24 bit digital tracks and mix through great equipment - awesome analog console, outboard, and to analog tape.
Thanks
Greg

That's an almost impossible combination. Suffice to say that if you're not a very good friend with the guy in question, you won't be able to sit longer than two minutes in the room before you get kicked out.

IIRC, Andy Wallace lives in New Jersey. Can anyone up north confirm if even the name brand studios can hold "the rate"?  $1300 a day seem normal to everyone ? May include an assistant and PTHD...In my experience, an engineers rate is directly tied to his popularity and last few records successes, not the least bit related to his/her TALENT, so don't be shy, call the guys you always wanted to work with.
For what it's worth, I met Tim Gilles a few years ago, found him to be funny, smart and engaging. Bought a few records he worked on, sounded ripper. Big Blue Meenie should do you right.

You may want to check out Watermusic.

Ken Lewis  www.protoolsmixing.com

He has bunches of platinum, grammies, and #1's, and while he does his big work in big rooms, he also has his own little pro tools based studio in NJ where he works with indies. Sounds like it may be the kind of thing you're looking for. Let him know who referred you if you contact him.
