I just came up on profit (for once!) and I want to pick through some old used stuff, but my amateur googling picks up outfits like zzounds and sweetser.  Blecch.

I am not sure it's all that simple and direct.  I literally spend a large number of hours each week searching the 'net for exactly what I want.  I have done that for years.  During that time I have made friends and connections at many places -- not just one.  And I think that's how you've got to start.  Pick something you want or need to own.  Do extensive searching and dive in.
