For me it has varied over the past year from a couple per week to a couple per month. I did a transfer to lacquer from 1/4" this morning.

My A80VU preview deck woke up very unhappy on Tuesday. There was a problem with the reel motors spinning on startup and no transport functions. I had never dug into that part of the machine before. I was able to fix it in about 3hrs. It made me feel like I actually know what I'm doing.

I'm down to about ONE per month now, always 1/2 inch.

I recently transferred 24/48 files to half inch per clients request for a hard rock project, Foo Fighters type sound. On an ATR Service Co. (M. Spitz) restored ATR-102 with Ampex heads, GP9, 30 ips +6/185, needles pushing 0 to +1 I was pleased with the results. Going over +1 or aligning to +9/185 didn't help the project IMO.

I've been encouraging my lower end clients who work at home to buy used 1/4" machines and begin experimenting with 'em. For a few hundred bucks I've seen Revox, Tascam, Otari's on ebay in very good condition. I think this would be a much better investment for a modest studio than  some crappy "TUBE" mic pre with one  12AX7 sucking 50 volts out of a wall wart.

To date, no one has taken my advice, sigh!

Here it's around 1-2 per month, always 1/2" tape, have yet to receive mixes on 1" 2-track but it'll be great when it happens.

Best,

A good working properly aligned tape machine= few hundred dollars

Learning how to print to tape= a few months

better sounding records= priceless.

I get about 1 project every 2 weeks. wither 1/4" or 1/2". I have a few clients that use 1/4" to mix down to and I think I like it better than 1/2".

May I ask what it is that makes you prefer 1/4" over 1/2"?

A lot of us simply think that 1/4" often sounds better in contemporary applications.

Every format is a set of tradeoffs. Half-inch was one of many solutions to the problems of noise buildup and noise reduction coloration buildup in 24 track analog recording. Others included automated noise gates, DBX, Dolby, "elevated" tape levels and recording at 30 ips.

I'll take either 1/4" or 1/2" over virtually everything else for almost any rock project...
